MoES Annual Awards 2018 to IITM employees


Dr. Vinu Valsala,  Scientist E was awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2018 for his outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Science and Technology. The award carries a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-. Shri. V.H. Sasane, Scientific Officer Gr.II under category ‘Group B’, Shri. Y.J. Pawar, Assistant Manager  under category ‘Group C’ and Shri M.S.Waghela, MTS under the category 'Multi Tasking Staff’ from the Institute got the MoES Annual Award for Best Employees for the year 2018. Their MoES award carries a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-, Rs. 10,000/- and Rs. 7,500/- for ‘Group B’, ‘Group C’ and ‘Multi Tasking Staff’ category respectively with a citation. The awards were presented at the hands of Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary, MoES on the occasion of Foundation Day celebrations held on 27th July 2018 at New Delhi.


Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated New SAFAR monitoring station at Delhi


Union Minister of Science& Technology, Earth Sciences; Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Dr Harsh Vardhan unveiled a state-of-the-art Air Quality and Weather Forecast System– SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting) at Chandni Chowk in Delhi on 21st July 2018. This new system will track UV-Index, PM1, Mercury and Black carbon in real time. The system, first of its kind in the country, was developed indigenously in record time by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune and operationalized by India Meteorological Department (IMD).



 

Press Release on CAIPEEX - Scientific cloud seeding experiment 2018

CAIPEEX Phase IV experiment has started on 3rd  July 2018 and will be conducted for 120 days, depending on availability of suitable clouds. IITM has established an observational facility and a dual polarimetric C-band radar at  NBNSCOE, Solapur, Maharashtra. A seeder and an instrumented research aircraft are being used to seed clouds and record the changes in clouds, leading to rainfall. This is for the first time, such science experiment is being conducted in the convective clouds over the tropics.

Dr. Pulak Guhathakurta, Scientist F, Head, Climate Data Management and Services, CRS, India Meteorological Department, Pune is on visit to IITM. He is giving a lecture on the topic "Use of Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation -Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in monitoring dry/wet conditions" on 10 July 2018 at IITM.

International Yoga Day celebration at IITM on 21st  June 2018


IITM has celebrated International Yoga Day on 21st June 2018 at its campus at Pashan Pune.  On this occasion, Yoga expert Dr. Pranav Khawale and his team from National Institute of Naturopathy Pune, Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, visited IITM and conducted a Yoga session.

Prof. Ravi. S Nanjundiah, Director IITM, along with IITM employees and their families attended this session.  Various  Yoga activities were performed during the session.  As designed by the Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, Yoga protocol was practiced by including Prayer, performing Asanas, Pranayama and Mudra.  Dr Khawale introduced the participants about  Yoga and its History. He emphasized on the importance of Yoga  in maintaining mental & physical well being in day- to-day  lifestyle.  IITM employees learned the asanas and  discussed with the Expert about their common  health issues. Director IITM addressed the gathering and narrated his experience by adopting Yoga in his daily life. He encouraged the employees to practice yoga to deal with stress, anxiety, etc. The event was conducted by the IITM Recreation Club.

Hindi workshop at IITM

Hindi workshop on the subject ‘Patrachar ke vividh Roop’  was conducted on 7th June 2018 at IITM. In the workshop types of various applications, office order, office memorandum etc. were discussed. Many employees participated in the workshop.

IITM signed MoU with NMU, Jalgaon for scientific collaboration

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, India and North Maharashtra University (NMU),  Umavi Nagar, Jalgaon, India was signed by the Director, IITM, Prof. Ravi S. Nanjundiah on 29 May, 2018. On behalf of NMU,  Prof. S. N. Patil,  Head of  Department of Applied Geology,  School of Environmental and Earth Sciences, NMU, Jalgaon was present at IITM. Senior scientists of Academic Cell of  IITM, Dr. P. Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Vinu Valsala, Dr. Milind Mujumdar and Senior Manager Shri  Ajit Prasad were present on this occasion. 

At the outset Prof. Ravi S. Nanjundiah, Director, IITM extended his warm welcome to the Vice Chancellor, NMU  Prof. P.P. Patil and Prof. S. Ingle,  Director School of Earth and Environment Sciences, NMU to visit IITM for detailed discussions on strengthening the scientific collaboration.  He stressed on encouraging scientists, faculties and students from both the organizations to explore all the means for strengthening the scientific interactions through collaborative research work, organization of training/workshop programs, short and long term internships.

The initiatives by IITM for introducing the Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in the curriculum at Post-graduate level courses at NMU will be proven to be crucial for the development of the skilled manpower in time ahead. 



 



IITM provided expertise scientific assistance to Govt of Bihar

IITM provided scientific assistance to Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA), Govt of Bihar on “Assessment of Air Quality Of Patna in various Micro-environments”. This is for the first time such air quality assessment was made by Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) through Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, in collaboration with the Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Change (CEECC) in Patna  during 19 October - 28 November 2017.

A technical report prepared by IITM was released by Shri Sushil Modi, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Minister of Environment and Forest department,  in presence of Chairman BSDMA, Principal Secretary BG, etc during the workshop on air pollution in Patna on 9th May 2018. Hon'ble Dy Chief Minister expressed gratitude to IITM and MoES for timely help in this regard.


MoU signed between IITM and SPPU on 4 May 2018

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Ganeshkhind, Pune, and  Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology(IITM), Pune, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 4th of May 2018 (Friday).  The MoU is signed initially for a period of 5 years. The MoU was signed by Prof. Nitin R. Karmalkar, hon’ble Vice Chancellor of  Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune  and concurrently Prof. Ravi. S. Nanjundiah, Director of  Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune

Observance of Anti Terrorism Day at IITM

IITM is observed the Anti Terrorism Day on 21st May 2018 at IITM. A pledge was administered to the employees of the institute by the Director of the institute.

Launch of SAFAR Mega Emission Inventory Campaign For DELHI-2018

Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India and the Chairman, Earth System Science Organisation, flagged off the SAFAR mega emission inventory campaign for Delhi on 12th April 2018.
It will last for about 2 months, where more than 100 graduate and post graduate students will be participating and collecting the primary and secondary data from as many as 26 different major and minor source sectors which contributes to Delhi air pollution. This will make the skill of SAFAR air quality forecast better as now the gridded emissions will be available at 400 m x 400 m resolution.

One Day Hindi Seminar and Poem Competition

Under the auspices of Town Official Language Implementation Committee a one day Hindi Seminar and self-composed poem recitation competition was organized on 10th April 2018 at IITM. Prof. Keshav Prathamvir, former Head of Hindi Department, Savitribai Phule Pune University was the Chief guest and Dr. Ramashankar Vyas, former Joint Director (Official Language) National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune was the Guest of Honor on this occasion. Dr. A. K. Sahai, Scientist G, IITM chaired the function and Dr. Omkar Nath Shukla, Member Secretary TOLIC convened the function. Representatives of 72 Central Government Offices stationed at Pune actively participated in the function. 29 participants presented their poems and out of which six winner participants (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 03 encouragement prizes) were felicitated with trophy and certificate. The program was grand success.

IITM celebrated World Meteorological Day on 23rd March 2018. On this occasion a  Special Lecture by Dr. Manoj K. Patairiya, Director, CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi was arranged at IITM on 23 March 2018 at 11 am.

Hindi Workshop

A Hindi workshop was conducted on "Official Language Policy" at IITM on 16 March 2018. Dr. Rajbahadur, Varishtha Rajabhasha Adhikari, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune was the faculty member for this workshop. Employees nominated by division/section attended the workshop.



International Women's Day 2018 at IITM

IITM celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8th March 2018. To mark this occasion and as a social gesture, the Institute collected old usable clothes of Gents, Ladies, Kids and donated them to “Shantiwan” a social trust based in Arvi, Beed District of Maharashtra. Various games were arranged for female employees of the Institute.

Prof. S. Ghosh, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, U.K. and School of Mechanical Engineering, VIT, Vellore, India is on visit to IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Turbulent transport of oceanic sea salt aerosol over the Indian sub-continent: Mass accommodation effects and associated cloud microphysical implications" on 26 March 2018 at IITM.

IITM Film on SAFAR received “Certificate of Merit”

A short film on SAFAR-Ahmedabad entitled, “SAFAR - An Environmental Warrior” received the “Certificate of Merit” by Vigyan Prasar, DST, Govt. of India, awarded during 8th National Science Film Festival -2018, held at University of Gauhati, Guwahati  (Assam) during February 20-24, 2018.

National Science Day 2018 celebrations

IITM celebrated National Science day 2018 as an open day on 28th February at its premises. Students from various schools and colleges, and public in general visited the institute on this occasion. Visitors were taken on guided tour to different laboratories and facilities at the institute. IITM scientists and researchers demonstrated and explained different aspects of weather and climate sciences to these visitors.

Lecture series on 'Cloud Microphysics and Dynamics: Observations and Models'

Lecture series on Cloud Microphysics and Dynamics was organized at IITM during 29 January to 1 February 2018. Prof. Wojciech W. Grabowski, Senior Scientist, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado, USA and Dr. Duncan Axisa, Senior Scientist and Director, Droplet Measurement Technologies (DMT), USA delivered lectures on Aerosol-cloud-precipitation interaction, Modeling, Observations etc. IITM scientists delivered special lectures on CAIPEEX and HACPL efforts.

About 45 participants from various Indian Universities and IITM scientists participated in this event. The lectures are made available in a Current Research Highlights of 6 February 2018 on IITM website.

Dr. Mrinal Biswas, Scientist, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, USA is on visit to IITM. She is giving a seminar on the topic "Hurricane activities at Developmental Testbed Center" at IITM on 19 February 2018.


Dr Harald Czekala and Dr Andreas Larsen, remote sensing experts from RPG-Radiometer Physics GmbH, Germany visited IITM and gave presentation on "Microwave Radiometers and W+V Band Cloud Radars for atmospheric observations" on 7 February 2018 at IITM.

Dr. Pinaki Chakraborty, Associate Professor of fluid mechanics, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Japan visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on the topic "Effect of rainpower on hurricane intensity“ at the Institute on 2nd February 2018.

MoU Between IITM Pune & MPCOST, Bhopal for establishment of Atmospheric Research Testbed facility

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed on 11 January 2018 between IITM, Pune and Madhya Pradesh Council of Science & Technology in the presence of Secretary, MoES at Prithvi Bhawan for the establishment of Atmospheric Research Testbed facility in central India. This will have state-of-the art experimental facilities such as, multi frequency radars, wind profilers and other land atmosphere measurements. Data sets from this facility will help in better understanding physical processes relating to convection, clouds and other atmospheric phenomenon and parameterize them which will lead to improvements in weather and climate predictions.


Inauguration of first Multi Petaflop Supercomputer of India / 8Jan2018 / IITM

India’s first Multi Petaflop Supercomputer : “PRATYUSH”  HPC System will be dedicated to Nation by  Dr Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, GoI on 8th Jan 2018 at IITM Pune.
