INDO-US Workshop on Downscaling at IITM

As part of the INDO-US Partnership for Climate Resilience, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) , Pune , U.S. Department of State, and others from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information are working in a series of workshops and collaborations to advance capacity for climate adaptation planning in India.  The first in a series of workshops is focused on techniques for downscaling climate information and opportunities for sharing available downscaled information to local planners in India. This “Workshop on Development and Applications of Downscaling Climate Projections”  scheduled on March 7-9, 2017 was organized by Center for Climate Change Research,  at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, India.

The workshop focused on sharing expertise in climate modeling and downscaling between Indian and US experts; present downscaled international climate model data for the Indian sub-continent, including NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) and IITM Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) program for South Asia ; engage and share experience in the applications of downscaled climate information to inform decision making, including discussions on the State Action Plan Development and identify collaborative research opportunities for developing additional high-resolution climate datasets for the Indian Sub-continent and approaches for their use in climate adaptation planning.

The participation in the workshop was by invitation. For details contact Dr Ashwini Kulkarni  at the address ashwini@tropmet.res.in / indous-workshop@tropmet.res.in

January 2017

COSMOS soil moisture sensor launched at IITM

A new cutting-edge Cosmic-ray Soil Moisture Observation System (COSMOS) has been launched by Prof. V.K. Gaur, Distinguished Scientist, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, Bangalore & Chairman, Governing Council, IITM on 31 January 2017.  A network of field-scale soil moisture monitoring stations is being developed across India (COSMOS-India) under the NERC-MoES program using cosmic-ray soil moisture sensors (CRS). The IITM CRS is the latest addition to the COSMOS-India network. Other COSMOS-India network sites are located in southern Karnataka (3 sites), Dharwad (1 site) and Kanpur (1 site). Additional sites will be added to the network over the coming months.

A dedicated Hydrometeorology Research Unit (HMRU) has been set up at the Centre for Climate Change Research (CCCR), IITM. The HMRU will coordinate the development and implementation of observational and modeling activities in parternership with the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) UK, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, and University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad. The COSMOS-India project will engage climate scientists and hydrologists to enhance the knowledge base on water balance components (e.g., precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture and runoff etc.), and to develop a national Hydrological Outlook for India.

Dr. R. Krishnan, Acting Director, IITM has been elected as a prestigious Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences 2017

Since the inception of  Indian Academy of Sciences  in the year 1934, nearly 2000 of the leading  scientists of India (as well as some from outside India) have been elected Fellows of the Indian Academy of Sciences. Along with the other academies of the country,  Indian Academy of Sciences  plays a major role in furthering the cause of science in the country.  Accordingly, Fellows of the Academy not only act as  spokespersons for their disciplines, but also for science.

The Academy publishes 10 scientific journals on different  subjects. Every year two meetings are held; the mid-year  meeting in July, usually held in Bengaluru, and an annual meeting held around November in different parts of the country.   Apart from this, the Academy also organizes several discussion meetings on important topics of scientific interest. Detailed information of these activities is available on official website of the Academy.

In order to encourage talented young scientists, the Academy  has a programme of selecting a few outstanding among them as Associates each year. The Academy also has an extensive and active science education programme in which the Fellowship and  the scientific community of the country play an important role.
