Advanced School on Earth System Modelling (ESM) & Workshop on Climate Change and Regional Impacts over South Asia:
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy are jointly organizing an Advanced School on Earth System Modelling (ESM) during 18-27 July 2016, followed by a Workshop on Climate Change & Regional Impacts over South Asia during 28-29 July, at IITM, Pune, India. The summer school aims at training the participants on the different components of the Earth System i.e., atmosphere, ocean, land, cryosphere, atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, ocean biogeochemistry etc. The newly developed IITM Earth System Model (IITM ESM) will be the focus of the School. Dr. M. Rajeevan, Honorable Secretary, MoES inaugurated the event on 18th July 2016.

Visit of Dr. Harsh Vardhan,HMoES to FAAM Research Aircraft during the Monsoon Mission Observational Campaign
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), is the nodal agency for the National Monsoon Mission Program of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. of India. As part of this program, three collaborative projects entitled SWAAMI, INCOMPASS & BOBBLE have been approved to be carried out by academic institutions from India and UK. This joint effort is part of the implementation agreement signed between MoES and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), UK on “Predicting the Variability of the South Asian Monsoon” under the existing MoU between MoES and UK on Collaboration in Earth System Science. These projects are jointly supported by MoES, Govt. of India and the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC), UK. The observational campaigns being conducted under these projects will improve the understanding of the smaller scale physical processes which will help in improving the computer simulation of models, parameterization of physical process, which in turn will produce improved monsoon prediction.
The main field phase of the monsoon mission has been carried out during May-July 2016 wherein a research aircraft with sophisticated scientific instruments was deployed to carry out atmospheric measurements. This atmospheric research aircraft (ARA) is co-owned by NERC and FAAM (Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements, UK). ARA was operated in India during June-July 2016 from Lucknow and Bengaluru airbases. Airborne observations have been carried out over Indo-gangetic plains, Northwestern India, East coast, Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and western ghats during this period and a wealth of data have been collected. The aircraft observations will be augmented by special observational programs over the land using boundary layer flux towers, radars, Microwave Radiometers etc.
Honourable Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan has visited the research aircraft on 11th July 2016 at Lucknow airport and flown in a research flight of duration 1.20 hrs.
