C4 : Monsoon 2013

Changing Chemistry in Changing Climate : Monsoon 2013

Venue

"Meghdoot", IITM, Pune

This International Conference will be hosted by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, India. IITM was established in 1962 and as a mark of its 50th Anniversary, it is celebrating the Golden Jubilee Year in 2011-2012. IITM is recognized as a centre of excellence for basic and applied research in Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences in India. It is a dedicated and premiere research institute in the field of tropical meteorology and monsoon studies, with state-of-the-art and world-class infrastructure and facilities. Since its inception, IITM is constantly striving for better understanding of land-atmosphere-ocean system and is committed for developing improved skills in monsoon predictions.

In addition to providing inputs for prediction of seasonal mean monsoon to the India Meteorological Department, IITM has recently developed a dynamic system for forecasting active/break spells of Indian summer monsoon. Institute's leadership and new initiatives include establishing a Centre for Climate Change Research (CCCR), a Centre for Advanced Training in Earth System Sciences and Climate (CAT-ESSC), successfully running Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX), real-time air quality monitoring and forecast (SAFAR) during Commonwealth Games 2010, etc. Currently, efforts are on in establishing an airborne research platform and a high altitude research observatory at a nearby hill station (Mahabaleshwar). In addition to its research activities, the Institute has academic collaboration with the University of Pune and is providing academic support for M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Atmospheric Sciences.
