December 2008

Honors

  • Honor to Prof. B.N. Goswami

Prof. B.N. Goswami was  elected Member of the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) of WCRP/IOC/ICSU of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for a period of four  years from 1st January 2009.

  • Dr. G. Beig elected as Fellow of Academy

Dr. Beig has been elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore from January 2009.

Visitors

  • Prof. Hassan Bencherif, Vice-Director of Laboratory for Atmosphere and Cyclones (LACy), Reunion University, Reunion Island, France. He visited IITM during 15-18 December 2008.
  • Prof. T. N. Krishnamurti and Prof. Ruby Krishnamurti, world renowned and famous scientists from Florida State University, USA visited  I.I.T.M. They delivered a series of lectures during 8 December to 18 December 2008 at  I.I.T.M.

  • Dr. Anoop S. Mahajan, School of Chemistry, University of Leeds, Leeds LS29JT, UK, visited IITM on 23 December 2008.

Workshop 

  • GURME International Workshop on "Air Quality Forecasting" (GURME-2008) took place in IITM's premises from 8 December 2008 to 12 December 2008. This was sponsored by World Meteoprological Organization and IITM. The major aim of the workshop was to provide opportunities to expose the advanced air quality modeling systems to meet the future challenges involving high resolution meteorological data and emission inventory of chemical pollutants.   • A three days Inhouse Hindi Workshop was conducted in the Institute during 22 - 24 December 2008.

November  2008 

  • Institute observed “Vigilance Awareness Week” during 3-7 November 2008. On  3rd November 2008, all employees assembled and took pledge to work for eradication of corruption. An essay competition on two themes, viz., “Emphasize the need for efficient and transparent governance” and “Initiatives to be taken for improvement of system and procedure to evolve good governance” was arranged on 4th November 2008. The Vigilance Week was concluded by a lecture of Shri Rajendra Deshmukh, Vigilance Officer, State Bank of India, Pune and distribution of prizes to the winners and participants of the Essay competition in a special programme arranged on 7th November 2008.
  • The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune  celebrated its 47th Foundation Day on 17th November 2008 at its premises at Pashan. Prof. Sulochana Gadgil, Honorary Professor, Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore was the Chief Guest of the function and Prof. R. Ramesh, Senior Professor, Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad was the Guest of Honour.  In addition to the main function, the programme included presentation of awards and prizes to the eligible employees, followed by Foundation Day Lecture on "Quantifying Carbon Transfer in Oceans using Nitrogen Isotopes" by Prof. R. Ramesh and inauguration of the Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. The celebration programme wasconcluded with the cultural programme arranged in the evening.

September 2008

  • Hindi Week was celebrated in the Institute during 15 – 22 September 2008. On this occasion competitions in Quiz, Noting and Drafting, Poem Recitation, Debate, General knowledge, Extempore Speech, Antakshari and Solo Song singing were conducted for the  Institute employees, research fellows and students. The Hindi week was inaugurated on 15 September 2008 by Smt. Veena Joshi, Director, All India Radio. The concluding function was  held on 1st October 2008.  
  • Prof. N. M. Kamble, Honorable Vice Chairman, National Commission for Scheduled Caste, Govt. of India, along with Shri S. Sivakumar, Director, National Commission for Scheduled Caste, Maharashtra and Goa visited the Institute on 25 September 2008 to conduct Review Meeting regarding implementation of rules of reservation and other safeguards to SC employees. He remarked that the work done by the Institute is commendable. As a commission they were satisfied regarding SC employees and their rights and privilages, except some individual complaints which will be taken care by the Director as promised to the Commission

August 2008

Hindi Workshop

  • A week’s Inhouse Hindi Workshop was held during 25-29 August 2008.  On the last day of the Hindi Workshop a lecture on ‘Use of Hindi on Computer and downloading of Hindi Software from Internet’ was conducted in the Institute which was imparted by Shri R.P. Varma, Assistant Director, Hindi Shikshan Yojana, and the Department of Official Language, Government of India. Institute employees attended the lecture.  

July 2008

  • As a mark of recognizing Technical Excellence in the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2008, to Dr. G. Beig towards his significant contribution in the field of Atmospheric Sciences in previous year.  
  • The 4th Scientific Steering Committee–Continental Tropical Convergence Zone (SSC-CTCZ) Meeting was held at the Institute during the period 30 June -1 July 2008. Several scientists from various scientific organizations participated in the meeting. The meeting was coordinated by Dr. N. Singh.
  • Dr. H. Annamalai, Associate Researcher, International Pacific Research Center / School of Ocean and Earth Science and technology (IPRC/SOEST), University of Hawaii, Honolulu, USA visited the Institute from 8-13 July 2008. He delivered two lectures entitled “Moist Dynamical Linkage between Equatorial Indian Ocean and the Monsoon trough” and “Response of the monsoon in a global warming scenario: Mean and Synoptic systems”.  
  • A one day workshop on "Climate Change" for Teachers, organized by Indian Meteorological Society, Pune Chapter, was held in the Institute on 12 July 2008. On this occasion Director delivered a lecture entitled “Science of climate change – expected future changes and how it may impact Indian monsoon”.            
  • Professor Upmanu Lal, Columbia University, NY, USA visited the Institute during 10-11 July 2008. He had discussions with Institute scientists. Also Ms Yvonne Colebank, Student, Department of Environmental Sciences, Columbia University, NY, USA visited the Institute for guidance for her summer internship from Dr. K. Krishna Kumar during 1 July to 15 August 2008.

June 2008

  • Prof. T. Yasunari, Hydrospheric Atmospheric Research Centre, Nagoya University, Japan, visited the institute during 17-18 June 2008 for having discussions with the IITM scientists. He also delivered a lecture on “Impact of pre-industrial land cover/use change in the 18-19th century on Asian summer monsoon” in the Institute.  
  • Dr. Srivastava, Scientist G, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad visited the Institute on 13 June 2008. He had a meeting with the scientists of Climate Change Group.
