Lecture Series on Weather and Climate Modeling
Dr. Kamal Puri, Research Program Leader, Coupled Earth Systems Modelling, Bureau of Meteorology Resarch Centre, Australia, visited IITM as Distinguished Visiting Professor from 11 - 23 December 2011. A pioneer in atmospheric modeling, Dr. Puri delivered a series of lectures related to Weather and Climate Modeling. He had interactions with Scientists and students during his stay at IITM.
Golden Jubilee Foundation Day celebrations
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is celebrating the 50th Foundation Day on 17th November 2011. (See the detailed program)
Kick starting the year long Golden Jubilee Year celebrations during 17 November 2011 - 17 November 12, IITM celebrated its Golden Jubilee Foundation Day on 17 November 2011. Prof. U.R. Rao, Chairman, Governing Council of IITM and Former Chairman, Space Commission was the Chief Guest while Prof. R. Narasimha, FRS, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore; Dr. P.S. Goel, Ex-Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (GoI); and Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (GoI) were the Guests of Honour on the occasion. Depicting the history and evolution of IITM over the past fifty years, a book entitled “Golden Fifty Years of IITM” written by Shri D.R. Sikka, Former Director, IITM was released at the hands of Chief Guest Prof. U.R. Rao. The book was freely provided to the guests, invitees, ex-employees of IITM and the media/press representatives. A booklet entitled “IITM at a glance”, highlighting IITM’s latest achievements, ongoing projects/activities, etc., was also distributed to the guests, invitees, IITM staff , ex-employees of IITM and the media/press representatives. Ex-Directors of IITM Shri D.R. Sikka, Prof. Keshavamurty and Dr. G.B. Pant presented a flashback of IITM of their era. A specially written and composed song for the IITM Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations was sung live by Ms. Madhura H. Kane, IITM SRF in sync with the specially prepared video being projected. Observance of Vigilance Awareness Week
The Institute observed Vigilance Awareness Week during 31 October - 5 November 2011. On this occasion, employees of the Institute took pledge on 31st October 2011. As a part of Vigilance Awareness Week debate competition was arranged on 3rd November 2011 in the Institute. A lecture by Shri Sharad Borde, Retired I.A.S., Pune on the topic "RTI and Vigilance" was arranged on 4th November 2011.
Hindi Week celebration
Institute celebrated a Hindi Week during 14-21 September 2011. During the week various competitions were organized on the diverse subjects.
First training course in 'The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT)'
The First training course in Earth System Science and Climate at 'The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT)', IITM, Pune was inaugurated on 8th August 2011, at the hands of honorable Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary to the Govt. of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi.

MoES Award to IITM Scientist
The Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India awarded the Young Scientist Award along with the Certificate of Merit to IITM scientist Dr. C. Gnanaseelan for his outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. He received the Award on 27th July 2011. (See more) (See the photos)
Dr. H. Annamalai, International Pacific Research Center, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (IPRC/SOEST), University of Hawaii, visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Dynamics of Climate Change over the Monsoon Region” on 26th July 2011.
Prof. Lakshmi Varahan, University of Oklahoma visited IITM on 18 July 2011. He delivered talks on the topics "Forward Sensitivity Approach to Dynamic Data Assimilation" and "Ensemble Filtering and impact of Observations on the Forecast" on 18th July 2011 .
Prestigious BOYSCAST Fellowship to IITM Scientist
Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India has awarded a prestigious BOYSCAST Fellowship to IITM Scientist Dr. Sachin Ghude, for the year 2010-2011 to conduct advance research at National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Earth System Laboratory, Atmospheric Chemistry Division, Boulder, USA.
Honor to IITM Scientist
Dr. (Smt.) Indira S. Joshi, IITM Scientist has been conferred with the prestigious "BHARAT JYOTI AWARD" Certificate of Excellence by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS). She received this award at New Delhi on 10 May 2011.
National Monsoon Mission Scoping Workshop at IITM
Institute organized "National Monsoon Mission Scoping Workshop" during 11 - 15 April 2011. This workshop highlighted objectives and proposed activities of the 'Monsoon Mission'. It included specialized training on Global Forecast System (GFS), Global Statistical Interpolation (GSI) analysis system and current version of Climate Forecast System (CFS) model with hands on (practical) training on model run by NCEP scientists.
Second Session South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF-2) Meet
Second Session of the South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF-2) was jointly sponsored and organized by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) during 13 -15 April 2011 at IITM, Pune, India. SASCOF-2 Meet focused on facilitating a common understanding and developing consensus-based outlook for the ensuing summer monsoon, over the South Asia in collaboration with national, regional and global experts. Experts from the SASCOF member countries viz., Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka attended the meet besides several regional and global experts. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) supported this meeting through its Climate Information and Prediction Services (CLIPS).
A Training Workshop for the seasonal prediction using statistical techniques for the SAARC countries of the South Asia was held at the IMD, Pune during 8-12 April 2011.
WMO appreciates the SAFAR project success
A letter has been received by Dr. G. Beig, Program Director, SAFAR, from World Meteorological Organization (WMO) officially appreciating the SAFAR project success. They have mentioned that the project "System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) for Commonwealth Games, Delhi-2010" of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. of India, is an excellent example of a well carried out project. The experience of this project serves as an example within India, in the larger region of South Asia and globally.
Inhouse Comprehensive Training in Atmospheric Science - Second phase
The fourth batch of the Comprehensive Training in Atmospheric Science - Second Phase (for the students of IITM - IITM Research Fellows, Research Associates etc. and newly joined employees) started from 7th March 2011 and will be over in the third week of June 2011. This Training Course covers:
(i) Statistical Techniques (ii) Observational Techniques , (iii) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics – Part II, (iv) Numerical Methods and Modelling and (v) Earth System Science.
Dr. Charlie Zender, Professor, Department of Earth System Science, University of California, USA, is on visit to IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Climate Sensitivity to Sub-grid scale Horizontal Winds" on 7 February 2011.
Dr. Ananthakrishna Sarma, Senior Scientist, Center for Atmospheric Physics, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), McLean, VA, USA, visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Simulating the Atmosphere using an Adaptive Unstructured Grid Model" on 8 February 2011.
Prof. Raghuram Murtugudde from University of Maryland, USA, visited IITM and he delivered a series of lectures on the subject 'Introduction to Earth System Science' during 17 February - 25 May 2011.
Lecture series by Dr. Marat Khairoutdinov, USA
Dr. Marat Khairoutdinov, Associate Professor of School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University, USA is visiting IITM during 13 January to 27 January 2011. His major research interests are Cloud Resolving Modeling and Superparameterization (Multi-scale modelling Framework:MMF). He delivered series of lectures. (See Details of lectures)
18th SPARC Meeting at IITM
The 18th SPARC - (Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate - A core project of the World Climate Research Programme) Scientific Steering Group meeting was held at IITM, Pune, from February 2 - 5, 2011. A local workshop was conducted preceeding the SSG meeting during 31 January - 1 February 2011. Following is the link giving details of the SPARC.
Training Course on 'Cloud Physics and Weather Radars'
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology organized a training course on 'Cloud Physics and Weather Radars'. This course was conducted by Prof. V. Chandrasekhar, Colorado State University, USA, during 3 - 7 January 2011. Nominees from other institutions participated in this training.
Prof. Raghuram Murtugudde, University of Maryland, USA, visited the Institute and delivered a lecture on "Biogeochem of GFDL Model" on 14th January 2011.
Dr. Sanjiv Ramachandran, Department of Physics, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, USA visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Sub grid modeling in LES : Gaining insights from the Sub grid conservation equations", on 25 January 2011.
Honor to IITM Scientist
Dr. P.C.S. Devara, Advisor/Scientist "G" and Head, Physical Meteorology and Aerology Division has been selected for the prestigious "BHARAT JYOTI AWARD" for his significant contributions in the field of Earth, Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences, by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS). He received this global award at a special ceremony organized at Speaker Hall, Rafi Marg, New Delhi-1 on 07 January 2011.
