Dr. Satyaban B Ratna, Alpplications Laboratory, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences, JAMSTEC, Japan visited IITM. He gave seminar on "Tropical-extra tropical Interactions and its association with ENSO" on 7th December 2012.
Dr. Grisa Mocnik, Member, United Nations ECE Expert, Group on Black Carbon & Director Aerosol d.o.o. Slovenia visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on Black Carbon Research & Applications of Aethalometers in it" on 10th December 2012.
Dr. Prince K. Xavier, Model Evaluation and Diagnostics Scientist, Met Office Hadley Centre, FitzRoy Road Exeter EX1 3PB, United Kingdom visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on "Process evaluation of Madden-Julian Oscillation in GCMs" on 11th December 2012
Dr. Vijay Tallapragada, Team Leader, Hurricane Modeling, NWS/NOAA/NCEP/EMC NCWCP, USA visited IITM. He gave a seminar on "Advancing NCEP Operational HWRF Modeling System for Next Generation Tropical Prediction Capabilities" on 24th December 2012.
51st Foundation Day Celebration of IITM concluding the Golden Jubilee Year
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) celebrated its 51st Foundation Day on 17th November 2012 in its premises at Pashan. The celebrations started at 09.30 hrs with inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Gate of the Institute and the newly constructed multipurpose Meghdoot Complex at the hands of Prof. U.R. Rao, Former Chairman, Space Commission and Chairman, Governing Council of PRL and IITM.
The main function of the Foundation Day Celebrations and other programs planned to mark the occasion were held in the Meghdoot Complex. Prof. Jagadish Shukla, Distinguished Professor, George Mason University, USA and President, Institute of Global Environment and Society, USA was the chief Guest of the function. Prof. Yamagata, Director of Application Laboratory, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) was the Guest of Honour. Prof. B.N. Goswami, Director IITM welcomed all and briefed about the Institute’s progress and its current activities. Prof. U.R. Rao and Prof. Jagadish Shukla appreciated the Institute’s work and its progress in their address.
The celebration was marked by presentation of different awards. To mark its Golden Jubilee the IITM announced the Golden Jubilee Award to scientists of the Institute. Dr. P.C.S. Devara and Dr. G. Beig received the Golden Jubilee award for their excellent scientific contribution at the hands of Prof. U. R. Rao. The Annual Silver Jubilee Award for the best research paper published in peer reviewed journal for the year 2011 was presented to Dr. M. G. Manoj, Dr. P.C.S. Devara, Dr. P.D. Safai and Dr. B.N. Goswami for their research paper entitled, ‘Absorbing aerosols facilitate transition of Indian monsoon breaks to active spells’, published in Climate Dynamics, 37, December 2011, 2181-2198 at the hands of Prof. Yamagata. Best Student Research Paper Award for the year 2011 was presented to Smt. Ayantika De for the paper entitled, Dynamical response of the South Asian monsoon trough to latent heating from stratiform and convective precipitation coauthored by R. Krishnan and published in Journal of Atmospheric Sciences, 68, June 2011, 1347-1363 at the hands of Prof. Jagadish Shukla.
Shri G.N. Limaye, Shri H.K. Trimbake and Shri M.S. Waghela received the Excellent Performance Award for the year 2011 for the Administrative, Technical and Multi-Tasking Staff, respectively, and an award from the donation received from Dr. Anandu Vernekar for a daughter of an economically backward employee of the Institute to Kum. Sukanya Ghanwat, daughter of Shri S.B. Ghanwat, a Multitasking Employee, at the hands of Prof. B.N. Goswami, Director, IITM.
The above programme was followed by the Foundation Day Lecture on ‘Toward Predicting Subtropical Climate Variability - Beyond ENSO and IOD’ by Prof. T. Yamagata, Golden Jubilee Award Lectures by Dr. P. C. S. Devara and Dr. G. Beig, Silver Jubilee Award Lecture by Dr. M. G. Manoj and Best Student Paper Award Lecture by Ayantika De Choudhury.
Institute’s present and past employees and some invitees attended the function. The celebration was concluded in the evening by an entertainment programme. As part of the Institute's Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations various competitions were organized. The prizes were presented to the winners at the hands of Prof. B.N. Goswami.
Fourth Prof. P.R. Pisharoty Distinguished Lecture
Indian Meteorological Society, Pune Chapter and IITM are jointly organizing the “Fourth Prof. P.R. Pisharoty Distinguished Lecture". Prof. P.R. Pisharoty Distinguished Lecture was delivered by world famous scientist Prof. Toshio Yamagata, Director, Application Laboratory, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Sci. & Technology (JAMSTEC) on 16 November 2012 at IITM, Pune, on the topic "Using cutting edge science to understand climate variation and its impact on society".
Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations
As part of the Institute's Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations various competitions viz. Flower Arrangement, Spelling Bee, Cooking, Best out of Waste, Talent Performance (Monoact, Recitation, Singing, Dancing) and Golden Jubilee Antakshari were organized in the Institute. Institute’s employees, Research Fellows, Research Associates, Trainee Scientists, and staff on contract basis participated in the competitions. Also an exhibition of personal collections of some of the employees and students was arranged. The prizes were presented to the winners on the Institute's 51st Foundation Day on 17th November 2012. The event received overwhelming response.
As per CVC guidelines IITM is observing the Vigilance Awareness Week during 29 October - 3 November 2012. A pledge on anticorruption was taken by all employees on 29th October 2012. On this occasion a slogan competition was orchestrated on the theme 'Transparency in Public Procumrement'. The concluding function of the Vigilance Awareness Week was arranged on 2nd November 2012. As a part of concluding session of this function Smt. M.S. Satarkar, Dy. General Manager, Vigilance Department, Bank of Maharashra, was invited as a Chief Guest who delivered a lecture on this subject. The prizes to the winners of the Slogan competition were awarded by the hands of Chief guest.
Dr. Swadhin K. Behera, Team Leader, Low-latitude Climate Prediction Research, Climate Variation Predictability and Applicability Research Program, Research Institute for Global Change/Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Sci. & Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan and Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Ocean Technology, Policy and Environment, The University of Tokyo, Japan is on visit to IITM. He delivered a seminar ln "Decadal sea level changes associated with ENSO Modoki" on 15th November 2012 at IITM.
Dr. Bipin Kumar, Ilmenau Technical University, Germany visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Simulation of Droplet Dynamics in Turbulent Mixing and Entrainment at Cloud Boundary" on 26th November 2012

Short Course on Data Assimilation: Dr. Talagrand, France at IITM
National Workshop cum Training on – ‘Data Assimilation for Atmospheric and Ocean models’, has been organized by IITM during 3-10 October 2012 at IITM. Dr. Oliver Talagrand, Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, France, a pioneer in the field of Data Assimilation visited IITM during 3-10 October 2012 and delivered a short course on inverse problem, and different data assimilation techniques.

Fourth National Workshop on Climate Change : Indian Ocean and Monsoon
The Centre for Climate Change Research, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (CCCR-IITM), Pune, National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), New Delhi are organizing the Fourth National Workshop on Climate Change: Indian Ocean and Monsoon at National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, during 6-7 September, 2012.
Dr. Samar K. Guharay, Chief Scientist, MITRE Corporation, USA, visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Negative Ions and Emerging Interdisciplinary Problems” on 22 August 2012 at IITM.
MoES Awards to IITM Employees
MoES has awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2012 to IITM scientist Dr. S.D. Pawar for his outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Science and Technology. The award carries a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 30,000/-.

Popular talk on climate change by Dr. G.B. Pant
Dr. G.B. Pant, Visiting Professor at School of Environment & Natural Resources (SENR), Doon University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Former Director, IITM Pune and Former President IMS National Council, New Delhi delivered a popular talk on "Climate Change in Uttarakhand Region" on 9 July 2012 at IITM.
Dr. S.V. Raghavan, Scientific Secretary to Dr. Chidambaram and brain behind National Knowledge Network (NKN) visited IITM on 8th June 2012.
Eminent Ocean Modeller & Climate Scientist, Prof. Raghu Murtugudde, University of Maryland, USA is on visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Better Physics adds value to global predictions at regional scales" on 18th June 2012.
High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL), Mahabaleshwar
For understanding complex interaction between aerosols, clouds and circulation, IITM has set up a High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) at Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra, supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). For the proposed HACPL, Foundation Stone Laying ceremony was held on 24th May 2012 at Mahabaleshwar by the hands of Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, honorable Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Govt. of India. The function was presided by Shri Prithviraj Chavan, honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra. On this auspicious occasion, Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, MoES, Govt. of India, and other dignitaries were also present.
Prof Jai-Ho Oh, Director, Super Computer Center, Pukyong National University (PKNU), Busan, South Korea, visited IITM Pune during 22-24 May 2012. He delivered a seminar on “Current development for a big data base on the Partnership and Leadership for Nationwide Supercomputer Infra Program and the Global Scientific Data Center – ultra-high resolution Weather/Climate Prediction” on 23 May 2012.
SASCOF-3 Meet at IITM
Third Session of South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF-3) was held at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) during 19 – 20 April 2012. The SASCOF-3 was sponsored by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). The Meet focused on more training programmes to be extended to scientists with emphasis on better forecast. This meet looked at coming up with a consensus in the forecast for the region. Representatives from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of the South Asian countries and experts in the field from various climate centers of the world, including WMO, as well as research scientists from different institutions in India including IITM and IMD participated in the session.
WMO Day Lecture at IITM
IITM celebrates WMO Day every year by organising a special lecture based on the theme of the day. This year, the WMO Day theme is “POWERING OUR FUTURE WITH WEATHER, CLIMATE AND WATER”. On this occasion a WMO Day Special Lecture on the topic "Communicating uncertainties in weather and climate forecasts for better decision" by Dr. D. S. Pai, Director, National Climate Centre, IMD, Pune was arranged on 22 March 2012.
Dr. J. Vivekanandan, Senior Scientist, UCAR, USA, visited IITM. He delivered a talk on the topic "An Experiment in Indian Ocean" on 29 March 2012.
Prof. Frode Stordal, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, Norway visited IITM during 27-30 March 2012 for scientific interactions. He delivered a talk on "Modelling of atmospheric chemistry-climate interactions" on 28 March 2012.
Dr. Jean-Louis Brenguier, Meteo-France National Research Centre, Toulouse, France visited IITM during 12-14 March 2012. He delivered seminar on "Aerosol, clouds and climate: Why is it so difficult to find evidence of the second aerosol indirect effect?" on 13 March 2012 at IITM.
OCHAMP-2012 : IITM Golden Jubilee International Conference
International Conference on "Opportunities and Challenges in Monsoon Prediction in a Changin Climate" (OCHAMP-2012) was hosted by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in association with World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) during 21-25 February 2012. The Conference was organized to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the IITM and dedicated to Monsoon Prediction in a Changing Climate. The focus of the five-day long event was on the opportunities and challenges in predicting the global monsoon (especially the Asian Monsoon) in a changing climate. About 350 scientists from India and abroad participated in the conference.
A short course on 'Predictability of Atmosphere and Ocean' by Prof. V. Krishnamurthy, USA
Prof. V. Krishnamurthy, Senior Research Scientist, COLA, Maryland, USA and Professor, George Masson University, a well known authority on Predictability studies of Atmosphere and Ocean, is visiting the Institute. He will be delivering a short course on 'Predictability of Atmosphere and Ocean' alongwith practicals during 9-20 January 2012. (See the details of program)
Lecture series on Inverse Modeling by Prof. V. K. Gaur
Prof. V. K. Gaur, an internationally renowned geophysicist and former Secretary, Dept. of Ocean Development (now MoES) is on visit to IITM during 24-27 January 2012 and will deliver a series of lectures on Inverse Modeling which is very important for Data Assimilation as well as in estimating role of green house gases on climate. He will conduct his deliberations in a more interactive tutorial form.
Challenges and Oppprtunities in Air Pollution and Climate Change (CHOP-C)
Workshop cum Seminar series on "Challenges and Opportunities in Air Pollution and Climate Change (CHOP-C)" was organized at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology during 16-18 January 2012. The CHOP-C Workshop is part of the Germany-India 2012 "Infinite Opportunities" programme and the first of two meetings where German and Indian scientists met to exchange knowledge and ideas related to the topics of air pollution and climate change. The prime objective of the event was to motivate young scientists of India through delivering quality thematic lectures by eminent scientists from Germany and India in the area of air quality, monsoon and climate interactions. Public Lecture on Air Pollution and Climate Change
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune organized a public lecture on “Does the atmosphere help us to get rid of air pollution? The self-cleaning capacity in global change” by Prof. Andreas Wahner, an eminent atmospheric scientist and Director of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Troposhere, Julich, Germany at NCL Auditorium, National Chemical Laboratory, Pashan Road, Pune on 17th January 2012 during 1730-1830 hours. The lecture was organized for the general public (especially that of Pune) to make them aware of the challenges in the field of atmospheric chemistry and climate. The lecture was followed by the public screening of a short documentary film on ‘SAFAR – The Journey of Air’. The film is about the successful development and implementation of a System of Air Quality forecasting and Research (SAFAR) for the first time in India and its successful communication in a popular format to the masses during CWG-2010.
