Prof. Jürgen Kurths, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PICIR) & Humboldt University, Berlin & King´s College, University of Aberdeen, UK, visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on "Are Modern Concepts of Complex Systems Science Useful for Earth Sciences?" on 16th December 2013 at IITM.
Prof. Andrew J. Majda, Morse Professor of Arts and Science, Department of Mathematics & Climate, Atmosphere, Ocean Sciences (CAOS), Courant Institute of Mathematical Science, New York University, visited IITM during 9-13 December 2013. 3rd National Conference OSICON-13 at IITM
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune and Ocean Society of India (OSI), Kochi jointly organized 3rd National Conference OSICON-13 at IITM during 26-28 November 2013. The main theme of Conference was "Role of Oceans in Earth System". OSCICON-13 has great significance in view of the dominant role played by ocean in weather and climate. Research contributions are invited for OSICON-13.
52nd Foundation Day of IITM
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune celebrated 52nd Foundation Day on 17th November 2013. Prof. K.N. Ganesh, Director, IISER, Pune was the Chief Guest. Prof. Wojciech Grabowski, Senior Scientist, Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), USA gave a Foundation Day Lecture. Silver Jubilee Award-2012, Best Student Research Paper Award and Excellence Awards for Scientific Support staff, Administration, Technical and Multi skilled staff were presented at the hands of Prof. Ganesh, Prof. Grabowski and Prof. B.N. Goswami respectively. A cultural programme was arranged in the evening.
On the auspicious occasion of the Foundation Day of IITM there was inauguration of the IITM Day Care Centre and IITM Car Parking at the hands of Director, IITM on 17th November 2013.
Prof. John Michael (Mike) Wallace from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA on visited IITM during 1 - 13 November 2013 as Adjunct Professor. He delivered lectures and had interaction with scientists and students during his stay at IITM. (More Details)

Dr. Alexei Korolev, Research Scientist, Cloud Physics and Severe Weather Research Section, Environment Canada visited IITM during 19-28 November 2013. He is an expert in theoretical and applied cloud microphysics, airborne instrumentation, data processing algorithms. Dr. Korolev delivered special lectures on "cloud physics and instrumentation". Dr. Rajiv Kumar Chaturvedi, National Environmental Sciences Fellow, Centre for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on the topic "CMIP5 based climate change projections for South Asia and its application for Impact assessment studies: challenges and opportunities" on 20th November 2013 at IITM.
Dr. Robert Gillies, Director, Utah Climate Center, USA and Dr. S.Y. Simon Wang, Assistant Professor, Climate Program, Utah State University, USA visited IITM. They delivered a seminar on the topics "Climate change impact in Nepal and its society" and "Intensification of pre monsoon tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal" respectively on 21 November 2013.
Observance of Vigilance Awareness Week at IITM
Institute observed Vigilance Awareness Week during 28 October - 2 November 2013. On this occassion an essay competition was arranged on the theme "Your positive contribution of Vigilance to IITM" on 31st October 2013 at IITM. A concluding function of Vigilance Awareness Week was organised on 1st November and a lecture by Shri B.C. Joshi, IOFS, Director, VIgilance, Ammunition Factory, Pune was arranged on 1st Novemeber 2013. The prizes were awarded to the winners of essay competition on this occassion.
Prof. Harshvardhan, Professor of Atmospheric Science from Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences, Purdue University, USA is visiting IITM during 23-28 October 2013. He will deliver talks on "Semi direct effect and emission from biomass burning" and "Air quality in the late twenty first century" on 24th and 25th October respectively. Also he will deliver a popular talk on "Aerosols: the uncertain component of the climate system" on 25th October 2013, organized by IITM and IMSP jointly.

Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology organized a "CAIPEEX Science Meeting" during 17-18 October 2013.
Hindi Week at IITM
IITM celebrated a "Hindi week" during 10 - 17 September 2013. During the week various competitions were organized on different subjects such as Quiz, Poem recitation, Antakshari, Essay writing, Translation of Administrative Terminology, Solo Song etc.
Inauguration of CCCR Building at IITM
Newly constructed building of Centre for Climate Change Research (CCCR) at IITM has been inaugurated at the hands of Dr. Shailesh Nayak, honorable Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), on 23 August 2013.
Inauguration of 3rd batch of CAT-ESSC
Third Training Course in Earth System Science and Climate (CAT-ESSC) was inauturated on 16th August 2013 at the Institute by the hands of Prof. B. N. Goswami, Director, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
Prof. S. Ramachandran, Asso. Prof., Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on the topic "Aerosols and Biogeochemical Coupling" on 29 August 2013 at IITM.
Dr. V. Balaji and Ms. Jasmin John from Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), Princeton University, USA visited IITM. They delivered a seminar on topic "The GFDL flexible modeling system: Towards the million-core era" and "Climate, Carbon, and Ecosystem Interactions" respectively on 16 Autust 2013 at IITM.
Dr. Subimal Ghosh, Department of Civil Engg., Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Data driven models to understand and project Indian Summer Monsoon rainfall" on 7 August 2013 at IITM.
Dr. Chandrashekhar, Colorado State University, visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Small Radar Network for mitigating urban flash flood" on 7 August 2013 at IITM.
Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, Grantham Institute for Climate change, Imperial, Imperial College London, Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on the topic "Vorticity, Potential vorticity and the monsoon" on 2 August 2013 at IITM.
MoES Awards to IITM Employees
MoES has awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2013 to IITM scientist Dr. (Smt.) Thara Prabhakaran for her outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Science and Technology. The award carries a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-.
From IITM, Shri P.W. Dixit, Miss Ashwini P. Bhujbal and Shri Sunil V. Raut have got the MoES Annual Award for Best Employees for the year 2013 under category ‘Group B’, ‘Group C’ and ‘Multi Tasking Staff’ respectively. This MoES award carries a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-, Rs. 10,000/- and Rs. 7,500/- for ‘Group B’, ‘Group C’ and ‘Multi Tasking Staff’ category respectively.
The awards were presented on the occasion of MoES Foundation Day celebrations held on 27th July 2013.

5th Prof. P. R. Pisharorty Distinguished Lecture
IITM and IMSP are jointly organised “5th Prof. P. R. Pisharorty Distinguished Lecture” at IITM. Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, Grantham Institute for Climate Change, Imperial College London, Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK delivered a lecture on topic "The Potential for Skill across the range of the Seamless-Weather Climate Prediction Problem – a Stimulus for our Science" on 31 July 2013.
Dr. Radhakrishna Basivi, Post-doctoral Fellow, McGill University, Canada visited IITM. He gave a seminar on the topic "Radar in rainfall nowcasting" on 29th July 2013.
Dr. Sandip Dhomse, Research Fellow, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, UK delivered a seminar on the topic "Development of a microphysical aerosol model to study the impact of stratospheric geo-engineering aerosols on climate" on 20th June 2013 at IITM.
Inauguration of Mobile Ka band radar
The Mobile Ka band Scanning Polarimetric Radar, the only such radar in Asia and the second most in the world was inaugurated at IITM on 30 May 2013 at the hands of Director, IITM.
CSIRO - SCFIS Meeting at IITM
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, in association with Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Australia, organized the meeting of the Forum on "Seasonal Climate forecasting in India and SriLanka (SCFIS) and its application to food Security" at the Institute during 23-24 May 2013. National and International delegates are attending the meeting.
Prof. Amit Agrawal, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is visited IITM. He give a seminar on topic "Effect of latent heat release on entrainment in a turbulent jet with application to cumulus cloud" on 29 May 2013.
Prof. Andrew Pazmany, Pro sensing Inc., Amherst, MA, USA visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "IITM Ka-band Cloud Radar: Capability and Research Opportunity on 10th May 2013 at IITM.
Prof. Raghu Murthugudde, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), University of Maryland, USA and member of Research Advisory Committee of the Institute, issued a lecture on the topic "Do we really understand ENSO?" on 30th May 2013 at IITM.
International Workshop "Changing Chemistry in Changing Climate: Monsoon” (C4) at IITM
IITM organized an International workshop on "Changing Chemistry in Changing Climate: Monsoon” (C4) during May 1st to 3rd, 2013. This workshop provided a platform for exchange of knowledge amongst the developed and developing world, specifically in the field of Atmospheric Chemistry and Health Impact of Air Pollution.
EARTH Day celebration at IITM
IITM celebrated the "EARTH Day" on 22 April 2013. This year's theme announced by Ministry of Earth Science, Govt. of India, is "Future Earth". On this occasion IITM hosted a film show entitled "Thin Ice". This film is about climate scientist and climate change.
IITM-WMO seminar on “Metropolitan Air Quality Forecasting and Services (SAFAR)”, took place at IITM on 30th April 2013. This seminar aimed at bringing together scientists, experts, practitioners and decision-makers involved in real time data generation, modelling and short term predictions in the field of air quality and weather to share evidence-based knowledge and experiences in order to discuss the current state, challenges in air quality and weather forecasting and to set the future agenda in the field.
WMO Day special lecture at IITM
IITM celebrates WMO Day every year by organising a special lecture based on the theme of the WMO Day. The WMO Day theme is “Watching the weather to protect life and property”. Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay, IMD, Pune issued a lecture on the topic “Watching the weather to protect life and property” on 22nd March 2013 at IITM.
Dr. Silvio Gualdi, Senior Scientist and Head of Climate Services division at CMCC/INGV, Italy, visited the Institute during 12-14 March 2013. He has contributed to the development of climate models and seasonal-to-decadal prediction systems. He is also a Faculty member at the University of Venice. He gave a talk on "The Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) and its climate/seasonal prediction system" on 14th March 2013 at IITM.
Prof. Veerabhadran Ramanathan, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA visited the institute. He gave a public lecture on the topic 'Scientific Basis for Climate Change' on 13th March 2013 at IITM.
National Monsoon Mission : SRMC Meeting
IITM organized the "Third Scientific Review and Monitoring Committee (SRMC)" Meeting during 4-5 March 2013. The monsoon Mission proposals and progress of Monsoon Mission were reviewed in this meeting.
Annual Monsoon 2012 Workshop
Indian Meteorological Society Pune Chapter (IMSP) organized an 'Annual Monsoon - 2012 Workshop' at IITM during 19-20 February 2013. The Workshop was sponsored by MoES and IITM.
Dr. Jimy Dudhia, Senior scientist and Deputy Head Mesoscale Prediction Group at Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM) division NCAR, Boulder, Colorado, USA visited IITM during 24-26 February 2013. He delivered a general talk on the topic "Introduction to the WRF model and a regional climate application in Colorado" on 25th February 2013 at IITM.
Dr. Darrel Baumgardner, renowned cloud physicist, Chief Scientist at Droplet Measurement Technologies (DMT), USA, delivered a lecture series in Cloud Physics and Instrumentation. Topic of the course was 'Challenges in understanding cloud and precipitation processes and their impact on weather and climate'. The course took place during 18-22 February 2013.
ESSO-IITM-ICTP Targeted Training Activity (TTA) at IITM
Earth System Sciences Organisation (ESSO) Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste are jointly organizing "Targeted Training Activity (TTA): Intraseasonal Monsoon Predictability and Prediction" at IITM from 14 January 2013 to 25 January 2013.
Prof. Dr. Alfred Wiedensohler, Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Germany visited IITM during 5-12 January 2013. He is an expert in tropospheric aerosol research. He delivered a series of lectures during the period 7-11 January 2013.
He delivered a general lecture on the topic "Future Research on the Impact of Atmospheric Aerosols in India" on 8th January 2013. (See details)
