Inauguration of IITM-IMD Winter Fog Observational Campaign 2015-2016
Winter Fog Campaign 2015-16 was inaugurated by the hands of Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary MoES, at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi on 17th December 2015. In addition to IITM and IMD, the Indian Air force (IAF), Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali are also participating in this observational campaign.
Environmental Information System on Acid Rain & Atmospheric Pollution (ENVIS) centre of IITM, Pune organized “Environmental Awareness Event” to create awareness about various environmental issues and spread the message of clean and green surrounding, every year. This year to mark this activity and in memory of Bhopal Gas Tragedy which had happened on the night of 2nd December 1984, the ENVIS-IITM celebrated “National Pollution Control Day” on 2nd December 2015 by organizing various events with the involvement of different schools.
Dr. Holger Mahlke, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany visited IITM. He delivered a talk on "Influence of orography on deep convection initiation in Central Europe" on 1 December 2015 at IITM.
First WMO Workshop at IITM
The First WMO Workshop on 'OPERATIONAL CLIMATE PREDICTION' was organized by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Geneva and hosted by ESSO-IITM (Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) - Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology(IITM)), Pune, Maharashtra, India during 09-11 November 2015.
Joint Conference: AsiaFlux Workshop 2015 & ISPRD at IITM
Joint Conference on AsiaFlux Workshop 2015 and ISPRD TC WG VIII/3: Weather, Atmosphere and Climate Studies on “Challenges and Significance of Ecosystem Research in Asia to better Understand Climate Change” was held at IITM, Pune on November 22-29, 2015. The event was organized by AsiaFlux, IITM, & ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Training course on "Ecosystem carbon flux monitoring using eddy covariance theory" was scheduled on November 25-27, 2015. Workshop on "Challenges and Significance of Ecosystem Research in Asia to Better Understand Climate Change" was scheduled on November 25-27, 2015.
AsiaFlux is a regional research network bringing together scientists from university and institution in Asia to study the exchanges of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere across daily to inter-annual time scales.
Hindi Workshop at IITM
Hindi Workshop on the subject "Rajabhasha Hindi ki disha, dasha evam sambhavanaen" was conducted at IITM on 19th November 2015. Shri Sunil Keshav Deodhar, Programme Office, Akashwani, Pune was the faculty member for this workshop. Employees nominated by division/section attended the workshop.
Communal Harmony Campaign Week (Quami Ekta Week) at IITM
IITM observed the Communal Harmony Campaign Week from 19th to 25th November 2015. All IITM employees took the pledge of Communal Harmony on 23rd November 2015. 24th November 2015 was cellebrated as Flag Day of the Foundation. Flag Day spreads the message of communal hormony and national integration. Also it is utilized for fund raising to augment the resources of the Foundation Day.
Celebration of 54th Foundation Day of IITM on 17th November 2015
IITM celebrated its 54th Foundation Day on 17th November 2015. Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman ISRO and Secretary DOS were the Chief Guest. Prof. Rajat Moona, Director General, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) was the Guest of Honor. Prof. Vinod K. Gaur, Chairman, Governing Council, IITM presided over. Dr. M. Rajeevan, Director IITM welcomed all and briefed about the Institute’s progress and its current activities.
On this occasion various awards were presented to the scientists, students, scientific, technical, Administrative support and other staff of the Institute. Dr. Ananthakrishnan Award for the Best Ph.D. thesis for the year" has been introduced as a new award since this year. This award was felicitated to Dr. C.T. Sabeerali for his thesis entitled "Modulation of Monsoon Intra-seasonal Oscillations by Global Warming" by the hands of Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar. The Annual Silver Jubilee Award for the best research paper published in peer reviewed journal for the year 2014 was presented to Mr. Siddharth Kumar et.al., for their research paper entitled "Role of interaction between dynamics, thermodynamics and cloud microphysics on summer monsoon precipitating clouds over the Myanmar Coast and the Western Ghats" published in Climate Dynamics, Vol.43, August 2014, DOI:10.1007/s00382-013-1909-3, 911-924, by the hands of Dr. V.K. Gaur. The Best Student Research Paper Award for 2014 was presented to Kum Aditi Deshpande et. al. for her paper entitled “Role of thermocline–SST coupling in the evolution of IOD events and their regional impacts” published in Climate Dynamics, Vol. 43, July 2014, DOI:10.1007/s00382-013-1879-5, 163-174, and to Dr. R.D. Ruchith et.al. for his paper entitled "Time evolution of monsoon low-level jet observed over an Indian tropical station during the peak monsoon period from high-resolution Doppler wind lidar measurements" published in Journal of Geophysical Research, Vol.119, February 2014, DOI:10.1002/2013 JD020752, 1786-1795 by the hands of Prof. Rajat Moona. Shri K. Salunke, Shri R.N. Kulkarni, Shri S.G. Purandare and Shri E.M. Botla received the Excellent Performance Award for the year 2014 for the Scientific, Administrative, Technical Support and Multi-Tasking Staff, respectively at the hands of Dr. M. Rajeevan, Director, IITM. On this occasion "IITM Research Report on Monsoon 2015" was released by the hands of Dr. Kiran Kumar.
The above programme was followed by the Foundation Day Lecture on "High Performance Computing in India” by Prof Rajat Moona, Dr. R. Ananthakrishnan Best Thesis Lecture by Dr. C.T. Sabeerali, Silver Jubilee Award Lecture by Mr. Siddharth Kumar and Best Student Research Paper Awards lectures by Kum. Aditi Deshpande and Dr. R.D. Ruchith. Institute’s present and past employees and some invitees attended the function. The celebration was concluded in the evening by a cultural programme.

Prof. Olivier Pauluis, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and co-PI at the Center for Prototype Climate Modeling at NYU-Abu Dhabi) visited IITM. He gave talks on (1) the atmospheric heat engine – for general audience and (2) isentropic analysis of convective motions for a research group on 12th and 13th November 2015 at the Institute.
Dr. Martin Schultz, Head of Group Global Atmospheric Modeling, Insittute of Energy and Climate Research, Jülich, Germany, visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Global surface ozone observations and analyses: Insights from the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch Programme and the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report" on 6th November 2015 at the Institute.
Dr. Duncan Axisa, RAL/NCAR visited IITM during 1-7 November 2015. He discussed about the data corrections of CAIPEEX data.
Dr. A. A. Sinkevich, Main Scientist, Main Geophysical Observatory St. Petersburg, Russia visited IITM. He issued a lecture on "Assessment of Cloud Seeding Results" on 2 November 2015 at IITM.
Dr. Andrei, Main Scientist, MGO, St Petersburg visited IITM. He delivered a talk on "Atmospheric Electricity Measurements in Russia" at IITM on 4 November 2015.
Dr. Yushi Morioka, JAMSTEC/APL visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Interannual-decadal climate variability in the southern Indian Ocean" on 26 November 2015 at the Institute.
Media Workshop by IMSP and IITM for journalists
Indian Meteorological Society, Pune Chapter (IMSP) in association with Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune (IITM) organised 2 days Media Workshop on October 08-09, 2015 at IITM basically for the Journalist reporting in the field of Atmospheric Sciences in print and news media. The details are given in the Brochure attached herewith.
Vigilance Awareness Week
As per the Central Vigilance Commision guidelines, Institute observed a "Vigilance Awareness Week" during 26 - 31 October 2015. On this occasion a pledge was administered by the Director among all the employees on 26th October 2015. Also a slogan competition was arranged on the theme "Preventive Vigilance as a tool of Good Governance". As a part of Vigilance Awareness Week, Shri G.C. Kumbhar, IPS (Retired) delivered a lecture on 29th October 2015 at IITM. The prizes of the Slogan Competition were awarded to the winners.
Dr.John McGregor, CSIRO, Australia visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on "Development and application of cubed-sphere models at CSIRO" at IITM on 30th October 2015.
Dr. S. Raghavan, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology (Retired), India Meteorologicla Department (IMD), visited the Institute.He gave a seminar on "Physics, Meteorology and the Social Sciences" on 28th October 2015 at IITM.
Dr. Chulkyu Lee, Climate Change Monitoring Division, Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Seoul, South Korea, visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on the topic "Global Atmospheric Watch Activities in Korea" on 22 September 2015 at IITM.
Prof. Hugh Coe, University of Manchester, visited to IITM. He delivered a talk on "Ground and Aircraft Observations of Aerosols and Aerosol-Cloud Interactions" at 22 September 2015 at IITM.
Hindi Week Celebration
IITM celebrated Hindi Week from 7 - 14 September 2015 by organizing various competitions on the diverse subjects namely, Quiz, Essay Writing, Poem recitation, Antakshari, Noting & Drafting, Solo Song. On 11th September 2015 a National Kavi Sammelan was organized in IITM. The concluding program was on 14th September 2015. Dr. Rajkishor Pande, Scientist G, Deputy Director, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune was the Chief Guest. Awards were distributed to the winners of the various competitions.
Observance of Sadbhavana Diwas
The "Sadbhavana Diwas" was observed on 20th August 2015 at IITM. The theme of Sadbhavana is to promote national integration and communal harmony among people of all religion, languages and regions. The idea behind observance of "Sadbhavava Diwas" is to eschew violence and to promote goodwill among people.
MoES Annual Awards to IITM employees
Dr. P. Mukhopadhyay, was awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2015 for his outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Science and Technology. The award carries a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-. Dr. Deewan Singh Bisht , Dr. Omkar Nath Shukla under category ‘Group B’, Shri Dilip E. Shinde under category ‘Group C’ and Shri G.E. Dhongade under the category 'Multi Tasking Staff’ from the Institute got the MoES Annual Award for Best Employees for the year 2015. Their MoES award carries a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-, Rs. 10,000/- and Rs. 7,500/- for ‘Group B’, ‘Group C’ and ‘Multi Tasking Staff’ category respectively with a citation. The awards were presented on the occasion of MoES Foundation Day celebrations held on 27th July 2015 at New Delhi.

The first International Day of YOGA is being celebrated at IITM on 21st June 2015 at Meghdoot Complex from 09:30 am to 11:30 am.
Inauguration of SAFAR-Mumbai on 23rd June 2015 at Mumbai
Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the “System of Air Quality & Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) for Mumbai” on 23rd June 2015. The inaugural ceremony “SAFAR-Mumbai Dedicated to Nation” was organized at Y.B. Chavan Auditorium, Nariman Point, Mumbai at 4:30 PM. The SAFAR system is conceived and developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune in association with Regional Meteorological Center, Mumbai-IMD and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).
This has marked a beginning of the services of “SAFAR”, developed for the MUMBAI METROPILOTAN REGION (SAFAR-Mumbai). The SAFAR-Mumbai delivers the following services to citizens of Mumbai:

Special issue of Hindi House Magazine Indradhanush published
Hindi House Magazine 'Indradhanush- National Hindi Scientific Seminar - special issue' was released at the hands of Dr. M. Rajeevan, Director, IITM in the Official Language Implementation Committee meeting held on 1st May 2015.
Prof. B.V. Rathish Kumar, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India visited IITM. He delivered a seminar on "An Overview of WEBS-FEM in Modelling and Simulation" on 11th May 2015 at the Institute.
ERPAS (Extended Range Prediction of Active/Break Spells), project of IITM received ISO 9001:2008 Certification by the Standards Certification Council. This is the Second project of the Institute which received the ISO certification.

IITM World Meteorological Day special lecture at IITM
IITM celebrates the World Meteorological Day and organizes a special lecture based on the theme of the Day every year. This year, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Srivastava talked on the topic “Climate Change and Global Warming or Global Warming” through his novel concept called scientoons. He is a retired scientist from the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow and a Science Communicator, popularly known the scientoon man and the Father of Scientoons and Scientoonics. The lecture was arranged on 23rd March 2015 in the Varahamhira Hall of the Institute.
Prof. P. R. Pisharorty Distinguished Lecture
IITM and Indian Meteorological Society Pune Chapter (IMSP) are jointly organising “Prof. P. R. Pisharorty Distinguished Lecture” at IITM. Professor Madhav Gadgil, D.D. Kosambi Visiting Research Professor, Goa University, Ex-Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru, delivered a lecture on the topic "Climate Change: A socio-ecological perspective" on 27th March 2015 at IITM.
ISO 9001:2008 certification to SAFAR - IITM
SAFAR (System of Air Quality & Weather Forecasting and Research) India’s first Air Quality Forecasting System, project of ESSO-IITM awarded an ISO 9001:2008 certification from Standard Certification Council of India.
Cabinet Secretary's visit to IITM
Honerable Cabinet Secretary Shri Ajit Kumar Seth visited IITM on 28 March 2015. Shri Swadhin Kshatriya, Maharashtra Chief Secretary, Shri Sourabh Rao, District Collector-Pune, Shri S. Chokklingam, Divisional Commissioner- Pune, Shri Anand Limaye, Director - Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA), Pune also accompanied him. Dr Rajeevan, Director IITM showcased the facilities and Scientific Developments carried out at IITM. A visit to Aaditya – 790 Teraflop HPC facility was arranged. The visit ended with Plantation at IITM Campus by the hands of all distinguished guests. The entire visit is a memorable event for IITM.

National Science Day 2015 Celebration at IITM
IITM celebrated National Science Day 2015 on 27th February 2015. It was an open day to all. Visitors including students, general public and the media were taken on a guided tour to show them the various laboratories, equipments and the Library of the Institute.
Launching of new Mobile App : SAFAR-Air
Research team of IITM has developed the "MobileApp" named "SAFAR-Air" to provide the Online metro Air Quality information Service in real time which is first mobile application service in India to provide current and 1 day advance forecast for air quality and related health advisories. This is the first mobile application service in India to provide current and 1 day advance forecast for air quality and related health advisories in terms of colour-coded system that allows the public to easily comprehend the air & to make any adjustments to their personal outdoor plans based on advisory in their handset.
Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Hon'ble Secretary, Govt of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences dedicated the MobileApp- "SAFAR-Air" to the nation on 17th February 2015 at 1030 hrs in IITM, Pune.
Targeted Training Activity at IITM
IITM in association with International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Itlay and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) organized a Targeted Training Activity (TTA) on "Modelling and Prediction of Asian Monsoons: Improving Physical Processes" during 9-20 February 2015 at IITM. Dr. Rupa Kumar, WMO, Dr. Fred Kucharaski, ICTP and Prof. J. Shukla, Professor, Climate Dynamics, George Mason University, USA, attended the inaugural function of ICTP-TTA on 9th February 2015 at IITM.
Monsoon Mission Review Meeting at IITM
First Monsoon Mission Review Meeting was held at IITM, Pune during 18-20 February 2015. Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Chairman, Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) and the Secretary, Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) and Dr Vinod Gaur, Chairman, Governing Council, ESSO-IITM and other national and international scientists attended the meeting.
Prof. Valerio Lucarini, Meteorological Institute University of Hamburg, Grindelberg 5, D-20144 Hamburg Germany, visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on the topic "Analysis of CMIP3 and CMIP5 models performance in representing the hydrological cycle in major South and South-East Asian river basins: present climate and future climate projections" on 2nd February 2015 at IITM.
Prof. Wojciech W. Grabowski, Senior scientist, Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division (MMM) National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), visited IITM during 19 - 30 January 2015. He delivered a lecture on the topic "Untangling microphysical impacts on moist convection applying a novel modeling methodology" on 22nd January 2015
