Upcoming Events ..... National science workshop on the on Advances in Science of Climate Change and Indian Monsoon A national science workshop on the on Advances in Science of Climate Change and Indian Monsoon was organized at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune (IITM) during 31 August – 01 September, 2010 on behalf of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the IITM. The objective of the workshop was to address outstanding scientific issues in the context of regional climate change, identify gap areas and propose directions for future research. Attendance is by invitation First World-Class Doppler Wind Lidar in India installed at IITM A world-class, ultra-high space-time resolution and portable Doppler Wind Lidar (Leosphere Model WindCube200) was successfully installed and commissioned at the Institute on 12 July 2010 for the first time in the country, and it occupies 25th place in the world. This 1.54 micron eye-safe lidar system can probe 3-dimensional wind field in all weather conditions (including rain, fog, snow etc.) from surface up to 12 km and beyond, using atmospheric aerosol particles and cloud droplets as tracers/targets. Thus this versatile compact (weighing about 65 kg) system provides simultaneous wind and aerosol backscatter profiles in clear-sky as well as within the cloud at spatial resolution of 20-50 m and time resolution of 1 second from land, ocean and in complex terrains using suitable platforms. In this connection, a training session involving the operation, performance and capabilities of the Wind Lidar, was organized on 13-14 July 2010 at the Institute. Inhouse Comprehensive Training in Atmospheric Science The fourth batch of the Comprehensive Training in Atmospheric Science - First Phase (for the students of IITM - Research Fellows, Project Fellows etc. and newly joined employees) started from 16th August 2010 and will be over in the last week of December 2010. This Training Course covers: (i) Mathematics for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, (ii) Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere (iii) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics I (iv) General Circulation and Climate (v) Computer Programming. MoES Award to IITM Scientist
The Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, awarded the Certificate of Merit for the year 2010, to IITM scientist Dr. A. Suryachandra Rao for his outstanding contribution in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. (Read more ... ) Announcement of a mini course on 'Clouds in Low Latitudes' Prof. Robert Houze, an eminent scientist, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington, USA and an authority in Clouds Physics and Dynamics visited the Institute during 2 -17 August 2010 as Distinguished Visiting Professor. Prof. Houze leads a research team at the UW called the Mesoscale Group. He and his group have participated in many international field projects employing weather radar and aircraft in the tropics and midlatitudes. He delivered a series of lectures on above topic. (see more about Prof. Hauze) Click here for Tentative Schedule of lectures and discussions by Prof. Hauze. Visitor Prof. Teruyuki Nakajima, Director, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI), Center for Earth System Dynamics (CESD), Chiba, Japan visited the Institute. He delivered a seminar on "Importance of the Surface Sun-sky measurements and its modeling for understanding the Climate effects of aerosols" on 13th August 2010. Dr. Axisa Dunkun, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), USA, is on visit to IITM from 30 August 2010. He is going to deliver a series of informative lectures about Aircraft instruments used for CAIPEEX phase II.
