First World-Class Doppler Wind Lidar in India installed at IITM
A world-class, ultra-high space-time resolution and portable Doppler Wind Lidar (Leosphere Model WindCube200) was successfully installed and commissioned at the Institute on 12 July 2010 for the first time in the country, and it occupies 25th place in the world. This 1.54 micron eye-safe lidar system can probe 3-dimensional wind field in all weather conditions (including rain, fog, snow etc.) from surface up to 12 km and beyond, using atmospheric aerosol particles and cloud droplets as tracers/targets. Thus this versatile compact (weighing about 65 kg) system provides simultaneous wind and aerosol backscatter profiles in clear-sky as well as within the cloud at spatial resolution of 20-50 m and time resolution of 1 second from land, ocean and in complex terrains using suitable platforms. In this connection, a training session involving the operation, performance and capabilities of the Wind Lidar, was organized on 13-14 July 2010 at the Institute.
The Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) The 7th AMY Workshop was organized in the campus of IITM on 10 July 2010. AMY integrates existing national and international research programs in the Asian monsoon regions. Currently, AMY has involved 24 national and multi-national projects and a total of 24 participating organizations. Many South Asian Countries' participants attended this workshop and shared their views. The Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) is a cross-cutting initiative as part of the International Monsoon Study (IMS), a coordinated observation and modeling effort under the leadership of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). The long-term goal of AMY is to improve Asian monsoon prediction for societal benefits through coordinated efforts to improve our understanding of Asian monsoon variability and predictability. It is believed that coordination and cooperation of individual participating and partner projects will greatly facilitate the efforts to reach this goal. Visitors Ms. Surabhi Menon, LBNL, Berkeley, CA 94720, visited the Institute. She delivered a seminar on "Short Term Offsets to Greenhouse Gas warming" on 1 July 2010. Dr. Dimitris Kaskaoutis, Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, National Observatory of Athens, Greece, visited the Institute. He delivered a seminar on "Effects of aerosols in our changing planet" on 16 July 2010 Mr. James Anderson of AWS Convergence Technologies Inc, USA visited the Institute and he will give a presentation on Lightning Detection System on 30 July 2010. Refresher Course in Atmospheric Sciences A two-week Refresher Course on ‘Frontiers in Atmospheric Sciences’ for college/university teachers and post-graduate students has been conducted at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pashan, Pune, during 14 to 25 June 2010. This Refresher course is sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and The National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad.
