WP/RASS Data Validation

Wind

WP data has been compared for the trends with the available monthly average normal winds from RS/RW Mumbai, Pilot Balloon data of Pune and current monthly average of RS/RW data for Mumbai for the months June-September 2003. Only higher height (> 3km) data from WP system is used for comparison with the Mumbai RS/RW data, since lower height winds are more prone to local features. All the data sets clearly show a decreasing wind speed up to 5-7 kms which then increases for higher heights. Wind direction changes from south/southwesterly to North/northeasterly for both the data sets. Change over occurs between 6-8 kms. Standard deviation values of the wind speed for the month of July 2003 for WP/RASS and RS/RW are comparable. Preliminary comparison of the observed atmospheric virtual temperature of WP/RASS in July 2003 with corresponding RS normal temperature values for Pune were made.

Typical Power Spectra for the three beams as observed from which moments are estimated leading to computation of u, v and w.

Temperature

Radio Acoustic Sounding system is attachment provided for temperature profiling. This hardware generates multiple acoustic frequencies and transmits simultaneously using one of the three acoustic antennas installed in the field. The interaction of acoustic and electromagnetic waves gives rise to significant RASS echoes which are proportional to the doppler shift gives the virtual temperature at respective heights of the atmosphere.
