Research Highlight

Prediction of seasonal summer monsoon rainfall over homogenous regions of India using dynamical prediction system

Moderate prediction skill for three homogeneous regions of India.
Extreme rainfall events are also well simulated by high resolution model.
Large scale teleconnections provides better skill for regional rainfall.
Regional scale hydrological planning at four month lead is possible.

I qualified GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Examination, 1988 with “Earth Sciences” as the main subject and obtained an overall 89 percentile.

I qualified Joint CSIR - UGC ( NET ) Examination, 1989 with the main subject “Earth Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences” and obtained a “Certificate of Merit” from the D. G., C. S. I. R. for my outstanding performance (and for being among the top 5% of the candidates qualifying the above examination in the All-India Merit list) on 2.8.1989 .

I successfully completed an One year Advanced Training Course in Meteorology (in 1994-1995 ) imparted by I.M.D. and scored around 78% ( highest in the batch ).

I successfully coordinated the Monsoon Mission Directorate at IITM, Pune (till October, 2014).

Foreign Deputation :

I had been deputed to Santiago, Chile to accompany an official delegation (as a Scientific member) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to participate in the Exhibition "India Show 2009" between 18 - 21 March, 2009. The activities and achievements of MoES were highlighted and the Scientific displays were explained to the high profile personalities as well as general public in a popular way in English and Spanish (the local language, through an interpreter/translator hired by MoES). The period of deputation was 17 – 22 March, 2009, excluding the journey time and the total duration of deputation was 15 – 25 March, 2009, including journey period.

Details of field experience :

I participated in the CTCZ Cruise onboard ORV SagarKanya (SK) during 13^th July to 19^th August, 2009 for collection of oceanographic and atmospheric data over northern and central Bay of Bengal, especially over deep convection region. We have been at a time series location (longitude 89⁰ E and latitude 19⁰ N) over North Bay of Bengal for 15 days and experienced high winds, rough sea and rain when a depression moved over us. We also took several zonal and meridional sections over various parts of northern and central Bay of Bengal.

Involvements in Institute programs / sponsored projects :

During 1994 – 2008, I was associated with the Non – plan projects of FRD ( the Forecasting Research Division) and was involved with NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction); Meso-scale modeling and air-sea interaction processes. Thereafter, since April 2008, I have been involved with the Institute program entitled “Development of a System for Seasonal Prediction of Monsoon” (associated with Dr. Suryachandra A. Rao). The objective of the above program is to develop a prediction system for seasonal prediction of Indian summer monsoon using atmosphere-ocean coupled model and thus it is very much in the line of the mission and vision of the Institute. The responsibility got enhanced as our Institute have been engaged with “National Monsoon Mission”. I coordinated the Monsoon Mission Secretariat/Directorate for about 3 years (January 2012 to October 2014).
I had been a Co-PI of the DST sponsored project entitled “Oceanographic observations in the northern Bay of Bengal deep convection during CTCZ”. Dr. Suryachandra A. Rao had been the Principal Investigator of the above sponsored project. Under this project, a cruise onboard ORV Sagarkanya was arranged for collection of oceanographic and atmospheric data over northern and central Bay of Bengal during 13 July to 19 August, 2009. Dr. Rao had been the Chief Scientist of the above cruise, hence lot of responsibilities were with us. Under his able leadership, I have contributed immensely for the successful planning, arrangement and timely execution of all details regarding participants and instruments and thereafter finalizing the Cruise report for the above cruise. I prepared annual reports and the Completion Report of the above sponsored project.

I have contributed for teaching, academic and HRD activities at the Institute & outside.

(a) Delivered several lectures to M. Tech. (Atmospheric Science) students of University of Pune for about 6 years (during 2003 to 2009), under MoU between IITM & University of Pune; M. Sc. (Atmospheric Science) students of Sabitribai Phule University of Pune (in 2014) and Research Scholars (JRF / SRF ) of IITM, Pune (in 2015).

(b) Guided students of various Universities for their Internship training and project works ;

(c) Have been a paper -setter & examiner of the paper “Mathematical and Statistical Methods” for M. Tech. (Atmospheric Science) students of University of Pune.

Lectures delivered

I delivered lectures to CAT-ESSC Trainee Scientists ( Batch-1, Batch-2 & Batch – 3), on the topic “Basics of Numerical weather Prediction” and on “Some basics about Finite difference and Spectral methods and their uses in the model dynamics of Climate Forecast System (CFS)” (in 2012, 2013 & 2014).
I delivered a lecture on “Some basics of Numerical Weather Prediction” on 18^thSeptember 2014and a lecture on “Finite difference method and Spectral method” on 19^thSeptember 2014 toM.Sc. (Atmospheric Science) students of Sabitribai Phule University of Pune.
I delivered several lectures to IITM Research Fellows/ Research Associates (as faculty of IITM Integrated Training course) for the Semester-II Core Courses on the subject “Atmosphere-Ocean Modeling & Data Assimilation” (C2) during January - June, 2015 and contributed for setting Question papers for the Mid-term examination and the Final Examination of the above trainees.

6. Ms. Shameera K. S., M. Sc. Studentfrom CUSAT, Cochin, completed her Internship Training s and Project Report entitled “Delineation of the onset, withdrawal and length of rainy season (LRS) of Indian Summer Monsoon using Meridional Tropospheric Temperature Gradient data of Climate Forecast system (CFS) hind cast” at IITM, Pune during 2013 (under Indian Academy of Sciences Research Fellowship program). 7. Ms. Shail Vijeta Ekka (a Dual BS-MS integrated course student from IISER – Kolkata), completed her Internship Training Report entitled “Some important aspects of Oceano-graphy and Ocean models” at IITM, Pune during 2013 (under IITM Internship Fellowship). I have been her Co-Guide.

8. I have been a Co-Guide and contributed for guidance to Mr. A. K. Akshay Krishna, a second year student of IISER, Pune for his Summer Internship Training on “Some aspects of Climate Modelling” carried out at IITM, Pune during May-July, 2013.

9. I coordinated the familiarization training of Mr. Akshay Anant Ghalsasi (of University of Washington, USA) who visited IITM during August-September, 2012 to get familiarized with Atmospheric & Ocean Sciences.

10. Ms. Koduru Sai Maanasa, M. Sc. (Climate Science & Policy) Student from TERI University, New Delhi, completed her internship training and project work entitled “Monsoon Variability in CMIP5 models” in 2014. I have been her Co-Guide.

I performed the duty of an “External Expert” of the Viva Voce board for the Viva-Voce examination of the trainees, conducted at (Central) Meteorological Training Institute (MTI), IMD, Pashan on 11^th March, 2011; 4^th July, 2011; 2^nd August 2013; 8^th August 2013; 8^th May, 2014 and 2^nd June, 2014.
I delivered a discussion lecture on “Seasonal prediction of Indian summer monsoon and the Monsoon Mission” to five M. Tech. students of IIT, Bhubaneswar, who visited IITM during 23-24 May, 2014 on an academic visit.
I contributed for assessment of answer-sheets of CAT ESSC Trainee Scientists (Batch-1, Batch-2 and Batch-3) for the paper “Atmosphere Ocean Modeling and Data Assimilation, Part – II (C2)” and “Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Part-II & Parameterization (C3)” (in 2012. 2013 and 2014 respectively).
I briefed about the modeling & prediction work at IITM to Mr. Shivesh Anand, a student from BITS, Pilani on 19^th June, 2014.
I briefed about the “Modeling & prediction work at IITM and various instruments for observations” to Prof. Pramila Koparkar (Dean, School of Technology, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya), who visited IITM on 30th June, 2014.
I contributed significantly for preparing Inputs towards reply to several Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha Priority questions, which were related to Indian summer monsoon rainfall and the Monsoon Mission.
I provided important input and information to MoES, required for the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) meetings, held at MoES, New Delhi.
I have been associated with Indian Meteorological Society, Pune Chapter (IMSP) and have been requested to perform the duty of the Rapporteur for various workshops (like /Annual Monsoon Workshops) and other meetings (organized by IMSP) for preparing the Rapporteur’s reports on the proceedings of the Workshops or for preparing the minutes of the meetings. I have also been requested for help in organization.

Coordination activities:

I coordinated the visit of Ms. Debanjana Das (JRF of University of Calcutta) who visited IITM, Pune during 10-16 November, 2013 for scientific discussions and data collection for the Monsoon Mission Project entitled “Bias estimation and effort for removal of UM/CFS coupled model output with adaptive techniques for improving forecast skill of Indian summer monsoon” (PI: Prof. Sutapa Choudhari). I discussed with her about the theoretical aspects of CFSv.2 model used for seasonal prediction.
I coordinated the visit of Mr. Shinto Rose and Miss Nisa Anil, who visited IITM for collection of data for their Monsoon Mission Project entitled “Role Of Ocean In The Extended Range Prediction Of Monsoon’s Active Break Cycle-Improving Hindcast Skill Of The NCEP-CFS Modeling System” (PI: Prof. B. Chakrapani) during 10-17 August, 2013 and 23 November – 1 December, 2013.

I coordinated the visit of Mr. N. Nanaji Rao, JRF from Andhra University (associated with the Monsoon Mission project of Prof. S.S.V.S. Ramakrishna). He visited IITM, Pune during 19th August – 18th September, 2014 in connection with collection of CFS v.2 model output data from IITM. Monsoon Mission Directorate provided him all support.

I coordinated the visit ofDr. Suminal Ghoshand his teamfrom IIT, Bombayto IITMon7^th August, 2013.

I have coordinated the visit of Prof. P. V. Joseph(of CUSAT, Kochi), who visited IITM during11-15 August, 2013. Prof. P. V. Joseph discussed with IITM Scientists.

I published several scientific articles on topics like “Cloudbursts”, “Tsunami”, “Thunderstorms” etc. in Leeward News / Bulletin of IMSP and articles and poems in Hindi in Institute Magazine “Indradhanush” for science popularization purpose.

Actively participated in the competitions of National Hindi week celebrations in many years (2001-2014) and won several prizes, e.g. one First prize for poetry competition ( in Hindi ) and 1 Special Prize for a Seminar presentation ( in Hindi ) on “Bhukamp” (Earth quakes ) at Varahamihira hall on 17 November 2002.

I am a member ofthe“Canteen Monitoring Committee” of IITM (for a period of two years, with effect from 1^st May, 2014) and attended meetings of this Committee from time to time.

I contributed for preparation of the Draft replies towards :

(a) Inputs for Lok Sabha Priority Starred/ Un-starred Questions : Total number of draft replies prepared = 20 (during 2012-2015).

(b) Inputs for Rajya Sabha Priority Starred/ Un-starred Questions : Total number of draft replies prepared = 08 (during 2012-2015).

I have been involved in preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) of various Schemes and programs of the Institute for the 12^th Five Year Plan (2012 – 2017).

I have been contributing in finalizing various reports (like Cabinet Summary, QPRs, Annual reports, GC report, RAC report etc.) of SERP program and helping Dr. S. A. Rao for preparation of presentations for Program Reviews and RACs. I also contribute for preparation of monthly Cabinet Summary Report of Monsoon Mission, which is sent to Ministry of Earth Sciences.

I actively helped and supported Dr. T. Venugopal / Mr. N. K. Agarwal, Seminar Secretary of IITM and Mr. M. D. Chipade/ Mr. S. P. Ghanekar, the Coordinator for visitors, whenever they approached me for help and cooperation. Also, I had briefed them about the necessary procedures for these works (from my previous experience).

I had performed the duties of Joint Secretary of I.M.S., Pune Chapter during 2007 – 2009 and contributed immensely for the publication of Bulletin of IMSP and Leeward News.

I had been given the responsibility of Seminar Secretary of the Institute and In-Charge for visitors to the Institute, during the period 12^th June, 2008 to 12^th February, 2011. I explained visitors from various Institutes and organizations (both academic & professional) the important scientific activities of Institute. In addition, I performed the duties of the General Secretary of IITM Recreation Club for 2 years (2005-07); have been nominated as a member of Physical Verification Committee during 2006-07; helped in compilation of various reports of FRD (like Annual Report, GC & RAC reports), etc. I participated in “Hindi week celebrations” of the Institute and some Hindi Workshops and rendered my help for organization of those events and sometimes for translation purpose also.
