Research Highlight

Ensemble based Regional ocean data assimilation system for the Indian Ocean: Implementation and Evaluation

A data assimilation system using Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) has been developed and interfaced with ROMS. This system assimilates in-situ temperature and salinity profiles and satellite track data of sea-surface temperature (SST). Combination of mixing schemes across ensembles are used to arrest filter divergence. The assimilated system significantly improves ocean state estimate. The temperature inversion layers in northern Bay of Bengal are better estimated by the assimilated system. The most profound improvements are observed in currents.
