Research Highlight

Indirect forcing of black carbon on clouds over northeast India

Liquid water path (LWP) in the cloud layers coherent with BC on different experimental days was found to be 206–327 g m⁻² over the region. Black carbon aerosol indirect effect (BCIE) for fixed LWP is found to be 0.32–0.48 on different days of observations. BCIF is found to reduce the cloud reflection by 1.5–2% over the region.

11. Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC)-India: An International collaborative project under which observations on atmospheric aerosols and precipitation, especially soot in air and dissolved in rain/cloud are undertaken at Pune and Sinhagad since 2006 (Co-PI).

12. The Land Campaign I & II projects: National observational programme by ISRO-GBP on TSP, size separated aerosols and BC were carried out at Shadnagar in Hyderabad during Feb. 2004 alongwith road observations and at Dayalbagh Educational Institute (DEI), Agra during Dec. 2004.

13. Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, Gases and Radiation Budget (ICARB): National observational programme by ISRO-GBP under which observations on aerosol physical and chemical characteristics were carried out over the marine regions of Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal, at Pune and at Delhi during March-April 2005 (Co-PI).

14. Aerosol Radiative Forcing at a Tropical Urban Station, Pune and High Altitude Station, Sinhagad: ISRO/GBP Project under National Programme on Aerosol Radiative Forcing over India (ARFI). Observations on aerosol size distribution, chemical composition, black carbon concentrations and optical and radiative properties of aerosols at Pune and Sinhagad, On going since 2008 (PI).

Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX): A multi-year, multi-institutional project for studies on role of aerosols in cloud microphysics and precipitation using aircraft observations and enhancement of rainfall by cloud seeding experiment over the Indian region. On-going since 2009.

Observations at Indian Arctic Station, Himadri: Role of Aerosols and Precursor Gases in Direct Radiative Forcing over the Arctic Region at Ny-Alesund”, A multi-year observational program at the Indian Arctic Station, Himadari during Arctic summer season on aerosol size separated chemistry, black carbon monitoring, optical properties of aerosols, radiation measurements, snow chemistry. Field observations:

Actively participated in various field observational campaigns conducted for the monitoring of atmospheric aerosols, trace gases and precipitation at different environments throughout the country such as Urban, Non-urban, Industrial, Forested, High Altitude, Marine, Coastal, etc. Data and results obtained from these observations have been used in number of important studies. Successfully conducted aircraft observations on black carbon profiling over South Indian region during 2009, 2010 & 2011 and observations on BC and aerosol optical properties in ground observational campaigns at (i) Barkachcha, UP during 2014-15, (ii) Mahbubnagar, AP during 2011 and (iii) at Solapur during 2017-ongoing under CAIPEEX program. Similarly, ground observations conducted on BC and aerosol optical properties over IGI Airport, New Delhi under the Winter Fog Experiment (WIFEX) during the winter seasons of 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Published about 103 papers in peer reviewed national as well as international journals and 7 articles in Books/Reports. Also, about 170 papers have been published in the proceedings of national/international conferences/symposia/workshops.
