GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Climatology is the science of climate, which is a composite of all weather conditions, averaged over long span of time. Climate varies over all time and space scales. Variation and change in climate makes great impact on human activities. Though rainfall is a most important climatic element affecting the human activities, temperature, wind etc. are also some of the influencing factors. All such factors determining the human prosperity are therefore being studied in the Division.

Hydrometeorology is concerned with the study of the atmospheric and land phases of the hydrological cycle with emphasis on the inter-relations involved. It is important for the design of dams and for the management of water resources. Hydrometeorological elements are useful in river valley projects, water management authorities and irrigation and flood control agencies.

The Climatology and Hydrometeorology Division is one of the oldest scientific divisions of IITM, devoted to a variety of research activities pertaining to the climate and hydrometeorological aspects. Carefully nurtured by leading Indian scientists in the field such as Drs. P. Jagannathan, D.A. Mooley, O.N. Dhar, G.B. Pant, B. Parthasarathy, P.R. Rakhecha, H.N. Bhalme, etc., the division has grown into a formidable family of about 25 scientists working together on various topics of contemporary interest. Apart from pursuing work under a few major themes, the scientists actively participate in collaborative programmes with other scientists from various universities and research organizations, at national and international levels. The division's contributions have been widely recognized. Organization of various symposia/workshops and training programs in specialised fields also forms an important activity of the division. The scientists have also been contributing to the development of manpower in the field, by providing guidance to post-graduate and doctral students. The division's main research projects are drawn up to undertake concerted studies of global and regional climate variability on monthly to century time scales, impacts and prediction of future climatic scenarios. Much of the work done by the division is available in the form of research publications in reputed Indian and international research journals.
