Recommendations:

Prof. DR. Sikka chaired the concluding session. All the Session Chairpersons / Rapporteures presented their reports. Dr. Sanjeeva Rao recalled the main objectives of the BOBMEX and suggested that further scientific analyses should be focused towards understanding the processes involved in monsoon variability and test the monsoon theories. The chairman reiterated the concentrated efforts by the individuals and groups in quantifying the role of oceans in modulating the Indian monsoon phenomena, which is the societal need for varied applications. The following recommendations are emerged from the discussion by various scientists.

  1. The efforts put up by several individuals as well as agencies in pooling the available resources, planning and implementation of BOBMEX are extremely productive. The BOBMEX has created an inter-disciplinary group of scientists to investigate the role of oceans in different atmospheric processes responsible for episodic nature of Indian Monsoon system and vice versa. The DST, DOD and DOS may provide appropriate support to keep this group dynamic and to continue their efforts vigorously.

  1. The initial analysis of BOBMEX data sets revealed many interesting and significant results. Detailed analyses and modelling may provide new insights of the monsoon dynamics and testing the physical processes, the response of the thermodynamic structure of the upper ocean to surface forcing, including river discharge, under different convective regimes.

  1. All the quality checked atmospheric (including measured fluxes) and oceanographic data sets (including Sagar Dhwani data) collected during BOBMEX may be made available on CD’s to the interested scientists for critical analysis. There is a need for a 3-hourly 1o x 1o Outgoing Long-wave Radiation (OLR) data sets for the BOBMEX period. The IMD is requested to provide the necessary data sets.

  1. Various authors used different schemes to test the phenomena or process modelling (for example, boundary layer and different fluxes). The workshop identified the necessity for uniformity in schemes. Hence, recommended the inter-institutional collaboration towards optimising the resources as well as efforts in analysing the results.
