Joint Conference: AsiaFlux Workshop 2015 & ISPRD at IITM

Joint Conference on AsiaFlux Workshop 2015 and ISPRD TC WG VIII/3: Weather, Atmosphere and Climate Studies on “Challenges and Significance of Ecosystem Research in Asia to better Understand Climate Change” to be held at IITM, Pune on  November 22-29, 2015.  The event is organized by AsiaFlux, IITM, & ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).  Training course on "Ecosystem carbon flux monitoring using eddy covariance theory" is scheduled on November 25-27, 2015. Workshop on "Challenges and Significance of Ecosystem Research in Asia to Better Understand Climate Change" is scheduled on November 25-27, 2015.

AsiaFlux is a regional research network bringing together scientists from university and institution in Asia to study the exchanges of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere across daily to inter-annual time scales.

Hindi Workshop at IITM

Hindi Workshop on the subject "Rajabhasha Hindi ki disha, dasha evam sambhavanaen" was conducted at IITM on 19th November 2015. Shri Sunil Keshav Deodhar, Programme Office, Akashwani, Pune was the faculty member for this workshop. Employees nominated by division/section attended the workshop.

Communal Harmony Campaign Week (Quami Ekta Week) at IITM

IITM is observing the Communal Harmony Campaign Week from 19th to 25th November 2015. All IITM employees took the pledge of Communal Harmony on 23rd November 2015. 24th November 2015 will be cellebrated as Flag Day of the Foundation. Flag Day spreads the message of communal hormony and national integration. Also it is utilized for fund raising to augment the resources of the Foundation Day.

Celebration of 54th Foundation Day of IITM on 17th November 2015 

IITM celebrated its 54th Foundation Day on 17th November 2015. Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman ISRO and Secretary DOS were the Chief Guest. Prof. Rajat Moona, Director General, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) was the Guest of Honor. Prof. Vinod K. Gaur, Chairman, Governing Council, IITM presided over. Dr. M. Rajeevan, Director IITM welcomed all and briefed about the Institute’s progress and its current activities.

On this occasion various awards were presented to the scientists, students, scientific, technical, Administrative support and other staff of the Institute. Dr. Ananthakrishnan Award for the Best Ph.D. thesis for the year" has been introduced as a new award since this year. This award was felicitated to Dr. C.T. Sabeerali for his thesis entitled "Modulation of Monsoon Intra-seasonal Oscillations by Global Warming" by the hands of Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar. The Annual Silver Jubilee Award for the best research paper published in peer reviewed journal for the year 2014 was presented to Mr. Siddharth Kumar, for their research paper entitled "Role of interaction between dynamics, thermodynamics and cloud microphysics on summer monsoon precipitating clouds over the Myanmar Coast and the Western Ghats" published in Climate Dynamics, Vol.43, August 2014, DOI:10.1007/s00382-013-1909-3, 911-924, by the hands of Dr. V.K. Gaur. The Best Student Research Paper Award for 2014 was presented to Kum Aditi Deshpande et. al. for her paper entitled “Role of thermocline–SST coupling in the evolution of IOD events and their regional impacts” published in Climate Dynamics, Vol. 43, July 2014, DOI:10.1007/s00382-013-1879-5, 163-174, and to Dr. R.D. Ruchith for his paper entitled "Time evolution of monsoon low-level jet observed over an Indian tropical station during the peak monsoon period from high-resolution Doppler wind lidar measurements" published in Journal of Geophysical Research, Vol.119, February 2014, DOI:10.1002/2013 JD020752, 1786-1795 by the hands of Prof. Rajat Moona. Shri K. Salunke, Shri R.N. Kulkarni, Shri S.G. Purandare and Shri E.M. Botla received the Excellent Performance Award for the year 2014 for the Scientific, Administrative, Technical Support and Multi-Tasking Staff, respectively at the hands of Dr. M. Rajeevan, Director, IITM. On this occasion "IITM Research Report on Monsoon 2015" was released by the hands of Dr. Kiran Kumar.
The above programme was followed by the Foundation Day Lecture on "High Performance Computing in India” by Prof Rajat Moona, Dr. R. Ananthakrishnan Best Thesis Lecture by Dr. C.T. Sabeerali, Silver Jubilee Award Lecture by Mr. Siddharth Kumar and Best Student Research Paper Awards lectures by Kum. Aditi Deshpande and Dr. R.D. Ruchith. Institute’s present and past employees and some invitees attended the function. The celebration was concluded in the evening by a cultural programme.


Prof. Olivier Pauluis, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and co-PI at the Center for Prototype Climate Modeling at NYU-Abu Dhabi) is visiting IITM. He gave talks on (1) the atmospheric heat engine – for general audience and (2) isentropic analysis of convective motions for a research group on 12th and 13th November 2015 at the Institute.

Dr. Martin Schultz, Head of Group Global Atmospheric Modeling, Insittute of Energy and Climate Research, Jülich, Germany, is on visit to IITM. He delivered a seminar on "Global surface ozone observations and analyses: Insights from the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch Programme and the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report" on 6th November 2015 at the Institute.

Dr. Duncan Axisa, RAL/NCAR is on visit IITM during 1-7 November 2015. He discussed about the data corrections of CAIPEEX data.

Dr. A. A. Sinkevich, Main Scientist, Main Geophysical Observatory St. Petersburg, Russia  visited IITM. He issued a lecture on "Assessment of Cloud Seeding Results" on 2 November 2015 at IITM.

Dr. Andrei, Main Scientist, MGO, St Petersburg visited IITM. He delivered a talk on "Atmospheric Electricity Measurements in Russia" at IITM on 4 November 2015.

Dr. Yushi Morioka, JAMSTEC/APL is on visit to IITM. He will deliver a seminar on "Interannual-decadal climate variability in the southern Indian Ocean" on 26 November 2015 at the Institute.

First WMO Workshop at IITM

The First WMO Workshop on 'OPERATIONAL CLIMATE PREDICTION' was  organized by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Geneva and hosted by ESSO-IITM (Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) - Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology(IITM)), Pune, Maharashtra, India during 09-11 November 2015.
