53rd Foundation Day of IITM on 17th November 2014

IITM celebrated its 53rd Foundation Day on 17th November 2014. On this occasion Prof. Pramod Kale, former Director, Space Application Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, ISRO was the Chief Guest.  Prof Mladjen Curic, Institute of Meteorology, University of Belgrade was the Guest of Honour. Prof. V.K. Gaur, Chairman, Governing Council, IITM also attended the function. Dr. R. Krishnan, Director IITM welcomed all and briefed about the Institute’s progress and its current activities.

On this occasion various awards are presented to the scientists, students, scientific, technical, Administrative  support  and other staff of the Institute. Dr. R. Krishnan received the Biannual Golden Jubilee Award for his excellent scientific contribution at the hands of Prof. Pramod Kale. The Annual Silver Jubilee Award for the best research paper published in peer reviewed journal for the year 2013 was presented to Dr. (Smt.) B. Padmakumari and et.al., for their research paper entitled "In situ measurements of aerosol vertical and spatial distributions over continental India during the major drought year 2009" published in Atmospheric Environment, Vol. 80, August 2013, DOI:10.1016/j.atmosenv.2013.07.064,107-121, at the hands of Prof. V.K. Gaur. The Best Student Research Paper Award for 2013 was presented to Kum. Saumi Chakravorty et. al. for her paper entitled "Spring asymmetric mode in the tropical Indian Ocean: role of El Nin˜o and IOD" published in Climate Dynamics, Vol. 40, March 2013, DOI:10.1007/s00382-012-1340-1, 1467-1481 and  to Kum. Sharmila Sur, et. al. for her paper entitled "Role of ocean-atmosphere interaction on northward propagation of Indian summer monsoon intra-seasonal oscillations (MISO)" published in Climate Dynamics, Vol. 41, September 2013, DOI:10.1007/s00382-013-1854-1, 1651–1669  at the hands of Prof. M. Curic.

Shri Oomen Abraham, Shri P.W. Dixit, Smt. A.A. Desai and Shri Birendra Singh Bhandari received the Excellent Performance Award for the year 2013 for the Scientific, Administrative, Technical Support and multi-Tasking Staff, respectively at the hands of Dr. R. Krishnan, Director of IITM.

The above programme was followed by the Foundation Day Lecture on "The problems and possibilities of weather modification” by  Prof Mladjen Curic, Golden Jubilee Award Lecture by Dr. R. Krishnan, Silver Jubilee Award Lecture by Dr. (Smt.) B. Pdma kumari and Best Student Paper Award Lectures by Kum. Saumi Chakravorty and Kum. Sharmila Sur. Institute’s present and past employees and some invitees attended the function. The celebration was concluded in the evening by a cultural programme. 

Rossby Visiting Fellowship to IITM Scientist

Dr. Suresh Tiwari, Scientist D has been selected for the prestigious fellowship of Rossby Visiting Fellowship to visit Stockholm for six months by International Meteorological Institute (IMI) at Stockholm University. This award was initiated by renowned Prof. Carl-Gustaf Rossby for "Conducting research in Meteorology and associated fields and to promote international scientific cooperation within meteorology" under Bolin Center for Climate Research, Stockholm.

Observance of “Quami Ekta Week (Communal Harmony Campaign Week) and Flag Day at IITM

Institute is observing the Communal Harmony Campaign Week from 19-25 November 2014 and the Flag Day on 25th November 2014 as per MoES File No. MoES/20/21/2012-ICC dated 27th October 2014.

Observance of Vigilance Awareness Week

As per CVC guidelines Institute observed "Vigilance Awareness Week" from 27 October to 1 November 2014. All employees took a pledge of anticorruption on 27 October 2014. On this occasion slogan competition was arranged on the theme "Combating Corruption - Technology as an enabler". Many employees participated in the slogan competition. The Vigilance Awareness Week was concluded on 31 October 2014. In the concluding function Shri C.G. Kumbhar, IPS (Former DIG) was invited. He delivered a lecture on this occasion. The prizes were awarded to the winners of the slogan competition.  

Lecture series on Cloud Modelling at IITM

Prof. Mladjen Curic, Institute of Meteorology, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia and Prof. Vladio Spirindov Associate Professor of group of subjects in Meteorology, Hydrometeorological Institute of Macedonia, Republic of Macedonia, visited IITM during 17-21 November 2014. They delivered a lecture series on "Cloud modelling" during the period 18-20 November 2014. Please see the program of lecture series.

Visitors

  • Dr. Rajesh Kumar, ASP (Advance Study Program of NCAR) Postdoctoral research fellow at Atmospheric Chemistry Division of NCAR, is on visit to IITM. He delivered a lecture on the topic “Regional modeling of air pollutants in South Asia: present status and future directions" on 19th November 2014 at IITM. 
  • Dr Nikolai Veremei,  Scientist, Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory, St. Petersburg, Russia visited IITM. He delivered a lecture on "Investigation of the impact of high atmospheric pollution by aerosols on the development of high depth CB with the help of 3-D model" on 11 November 2014 at IITM.
  • Prof. Sreenivas K. R.,  Engineering Mechanics Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, visited IITM. He delivered a talk on “Unraveling Micro-meteorological Mystery-The Ramdas Layer and Predicting Radiation Fog" on 3 November 2014 at IITM.
  • Prof. Vlado Spiridonov, Associate Professor of group of subjects in Meteorology,  Hydrometeorological Institute of Macedonia, Republic of Macedonia, is on visit to IITM for the period 17-21 November 2014. Indian Meteorological Society, Pune Chapter (IMSP) and IITM have jointly organized a Public Lecture by Prof. Spiridonov on "Storm modeling system as advanced tool in prediction and warning of severe weather risk" on 18th November 2014 at IITM.  (Pl. see the Abstract) 
  • Japanese scientists are on visit to IITM. Prof. Jun Matsumoto, Tokyo Metropolitan University is delivering a seminar on "Long-term Changes of Extreme Rainfall in Southeast Asia”, Dr. Taiichi Hayashi, Kyoto University is delivering a seminar on "Comparison of Raingauges in Natural Rainfall Condition" and Dr. Toru Terao, Kagawa University, is giving a seminar on "Direct Evaluation of TRMM 2A25 Surface Rain by Tipping Bucket Raingauges in Northeastern Indian Subcontinent" on 26th November 2014 at IITM.
