and call for participation
It is now well established fact that we are in the midst of rapidly changing weather patterns. The connection between rising atmospheric CO2 levels and global temperature rise is largely accepted as an established fact. Several alarming situations have been predicted; rising sea level, melting glaciers, droughts, floods etc. Our adaptive capabilities to these anticipated situations to a great extent depend how well the projection of regional climate is made. However regional climate projection suffers from some limitations that arise partly from uncertainty in emission inventory and partly due to deficiency in the models. Reducing these uncertainty levels poses a great challenge to the climate scientists.
The situation demands a thorough understanding of the science of climate change. This can be realized by having a robust system of acquiring observational data, rigorous statistical analysis to reduce the uncertainties and further development of climate models. While various institutions are engaged in climate change research in a sustained manner it is also essential to arrange short term training program to disseminate the updated knowledge on the science of climate change to the young scientists who are involved in some form of climate change research.
In this context it has been decided to arrange an SERC school on “Global Warming and Climate Change” to be held at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, during December 1-21, 2010. The School aims to provide an overview of the science of climate change and current advancement in this field to the Ph.D. students and young faculties actively involved in this field of research.
The following broad topics will be covered during the SERC School:
The faculty of the SERC School will consist of eminent scientists/researchers drawn from various institutions/ universities in the country.
