Research Highlight

Using a state-of-the-art variable resolution global climate model with a telescopic zoom over south Asia (35km) we conducted multi century-long climate simulation starting from 1886-2095.  We could demonstrate that a juxtaposition of regional land-use changes, anthropogenic-aerosol forcing and the rapid warming signal of the equatorial Indian Ocean is crucial to produce the observed monsoon weakening in recent decades and the enhanced possibility of occurrence of localized intense precipitation events in future. The present findings have a profound bearing on the regional water-security, which is already under severe hydrological-stress.
