Workshop on Indian Ocean-Monsoon Climate: Annual to Decadal Variability, Mechanisms, and Predictability

Workshop on Indian Ocean-Monsoon Climate: Annual to Decadal Variability, Mechanisms, and Predictability

(Venue: IITM, Pune; 19-22 May, 2026)

The primary aim of the workshop would be to enhance understanding of annual to decadal climate variability and its influence on regional climate systems, with a particular focus on the Indian Ocean and Indian summer monsoon. The workshop would bring together experts in observations, theory, and modeling to discuss key physical mechanisms, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and sources of predictability on decadal timescales. It would also aim to assess current capabilities and limitations of decadal climate prediction systems and identify pathways for improving prediction skill. The expected outcomes of the workshop include improved scientific insight into natural decadal variability, strengthened collaboration across disciplines and institutions, clear identification of research gaps, and practical recommendations for advancing annual to decadal prediction frameworks.
