Research Highlight

Possible role of aerosols in the charge structure of isolated thunderstorms

  • Electric field and Maxwell current data show that 10 out of 32 thunderstorms were having inverted polarity charge structure.
  • All thunderstorms with inverted polarity occurred on days with higher AOD compared to normal polarity thunderstorms.
  • Observations suggest high ice nuclei concentration can produce inverted polarity charge structure in ordinary thunderstorms.
