Under NITI AYOG identified activity, high-resolution IITM short-range deterministic forecast with GFS at T1534 (12 km grid) was developed and handed over to IMD for national operation in January 2017. The GEFS T574 and GFS T1534 modelling systems are efficient in capturing the heavy rainfall probability and heavy rainfall intensity respectively. GFS T1534 (~12 km) model was able to capture the monsoon progression of JJAS 2017, the heavy rainfall events over Mumbai in August and September 2017 and also the extreme heavy localized rainfall event over Gujarat. |
